Known as MAD's Maddest Writer, co-host of The Giz Wiz with OMGchad at www.GizWiz.TV, The Giz Wiz on ABC's World News Now, and on Tech Guy Labs with Leo Laporte on www.TWiT.TV.
1001 MAD Pages to Read Before You Die For the holidays, Dick recommends the deal at Barnes and Noble - 1001 MAD Pages You Must Read Before You Die.
1001 MAD Pages at Barnes & Noble Complete Don Martin And Leo recommends the Complete MAD Don Martin at Amazon.
Complete MAD Don Martin Gorillamobile Alessandro Abate read on John Gruber's Daring Fireball blog about the iPhone version of the Gorillapod, called Gorillamobile. They also have a free iPhone app called the Gorillacam. Keep up the mediocre work, prays Sandrino.
Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 As a bonus pick, Leo recommends the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 (now also called Webcam Pro 9000) which they've been using for a while (and which Dick uses as well). Some time ago, Leo did a head-to-head of the Quickcam Pro 9000 against the (then) new Microsoft LifeCam Cinema which Leo referred to in Episode 903. The video of the head-to-head is available at odtv.me. The performance was pretty even but in the end the Logitech edged out the LifeCam.
Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 The Cost of 12 Days of Giz Wiz Gadgets Dennis Pyott Senior, who previously suggested a few names for the TWiT Home Office, has taken the time to tot up the cost of buying the whole collection gadgets for Paul Minshall's 12 Days of Giz Wiz. It comes to $13,140.06. Chris Washer of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida has done the same thing but his total is $34,531, or 46.4 Alexes, or one Mustang GT, on the basis that the presents are repeated, cumulatively, every day.
Gadgets Factorial? An interesting question arises if there should be an accumulation from day to day, and Leo asks if it's a factorial of some sort. Not quite. In the end, Leo asks Paul Minshall the creator of 12 Days of Giz Wiz to give the definitive answer one way or the other. Paul helpfully answers, "Yes!"
Wikipedia thinks it should be a total of 364 presents. Apparently there's also some relation to the Pascal Triangle.
Wacky T-Shirts Apart from the Electronic Rock Guitar T-Shirt, there is also the Electronic Drum Kit T-Shirt, also available at Think Geek. Here's Dick's demo, video courtesy of Team ODTV at odtv.me.
More Wacky T-Shirts If you can't be bothered with playing a musical instrument and just want the finished product, try the Personal Soundtrack T-Shirt, with a built-in speaker right on the shirt front, and a wired remote for selection of sounds. This is as close as you can get to the Toshiba Sonic Jacket (Episode 170).
Personal Soundtrack T-Shirt Also don't forget the T-Qualizer (Episode 439) and the WiFi Detector T-Shirt mentioned in Episode 945.
For a much more sartorial approach to your wardrobe of tees, try GizWizGear.
The Award-Winning Show The Daily Giz Wiz was up against some fierce competition in the Comedy category at the Podcast Awards, but it managed to come through with a well-deserved win. For a video of Dick's acceptance speech, check back at Episode 981. Dick and Leo are grateful to their fans, especially the theme writers including Paul Minshall and Dan Lueders.
The Pains of TV Appearances Dick and Leo have both made many appearances on TV, and share the pains of long waits and having to bring along thousands of gadgets for mainstream shows like Regis - who had no idea what Dick was talking about when he mentioned uploading files to the Atari Portfolio (Episode 190) and taking them on the road.
Getting Wizzed Deke Kassabian, now Senior Technology Director of Information, Systems and Computing at the University of Pennsylvania who wrote in Episodes 481 and 516, has coined new phrases for phenomena caused by the Daily Giz Wiz. When websites get slammed as a result of a gadget being covered on the show, or when prices go up due to the increased demand, he and his friends call it the Giz Wiz Effect. When a gadget gets sold out, it gets wizzed.
Russell Hobbs ThermoPink on eBay The colour-changing technology for the 2000 Russell Hobbs ThermoColour Kettle is still used in some of Russell Hobbs's kettles, such as the Seattle Kettle.
Russell Hobbs Seattle Kettle The Michael Collins of TWiT John Slanina (jammerb) has recently joined the staff of TWiT. He's going to be the Michael Collins at TWiT for CES 2010. Everyone will be off to Vegas but jammerb will be minding the shop on his own at TWiT Cottage.
A Lopsided Moustache Ryan Harmon is a big fan of the show, and would like Leo to do the Scottish accent again. Leo does not oblige, but check out, e.g., Episode 173, when Leo sang the Letters Jingle with a Scottish accent. Ryan has been watching the video on TWiTLive and has noticed that Dick's famous moustache is lopsided.
In Search of the Podcasting Gene Leo is volunteering himself to have his DNA profiled, for the Personal Genome Project founded by George Church, Profession of Genetics at Harvard. This may lead to a major breakthrough in genetics - the discovery of the podcasting gene.
Swopper A listener has suggested that instead of sitting on a ball, Leo should try a Swopper.
A Swopper Chair Converting a Nurse David Pepka, a magician from Harrisburg, PA, of forentertainmentonly.com, last wrote in Episode 457. Recently due to a medical condition, David had to receive treatment in hospital. He saved up some of his Daily Giz Wiz shows, and between those and his favourite NPR "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", he had a lot of fun giggling, and converted a curious nurse into listening to the show on a new iPhone.
