Whill Personal Electric Vehicles

At the Whill exhibit I started off with a look at their intelligent personal electric vehicle (PEV) that was named a CES 2018 “Best of Innovation” Award winner at the last CES. Then I moved over to the MaaS (Mobility as a Service) demo area. Their goal is to design autonomous personal mobility technologies to safely move people through large and crowded venues such as airports, sports venues, shopping centers, and public sidewalks. For example, at an airport instead of an airline passenger assistant have to show up at a gate to manually push a person in a wheelchair; they're developing self-driving and self-stopping personal electric vehicles (that looks like moving chairs) to provide more independence to passengers who may need additional help. You'll call one to where you are via an app, and then tell it where you want to go. The spokesperson said two airports are already in a test-program and they hope to add more airports as the year progresses. There's a good example in the video in this week's show.

When you're far away from a cell signal, why not use Satellites to stay in touch?

Higher Ground, a Silicon Valley technology company, introduced the SatPaq at CES 2019. It's a lightweight, clip-on smartphone accessory that enables inexpensive (pay-as-you-go) messaging by satellite. For the 144 million outdoor enthusiasts in the U.S., the SatPaq solves two problems -- the anxiety of not ‘being connected’ and the frustration of having to pay monthly fees even if you do not use the service. SatPaq has recently been named a 2019 CES Innovation Award Honoree in the Wireless Devices, Accessories and Services Category. The SatPaq is the first satellite-messaging product to communicate directly to Geostationary [GEO] satellites for consumer communication. GEO satellites are in a stationary orbit around the Earth and are always in view. The company says messaging over Low Earth Orbit salstellites is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than using GEO satellites which in turn require a monthly fee, even when you don't use the service. By communicating with the big GEOs, the SatPaq says they can provide inexpensive, on-demand messaging service that you only pay for when you need it. $249.00 for the SatPaq. Then buy a message package and use them when you need them. There is no monthly service fee.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

Since the Gadget Warehouse is all about gadgets, here's one I never expected to see when I entered the NY Boat Show on January 24, 2019. Yes, it's a sport airplane! It turns out it was at the NY Boat Show because in addition to taking off and landing on terra firma, it can take off and land on the water.
