Giz Wiz Show 1742 - August 29, 2019 Independent Show #224

Wow! The Giz Wiz Showis in year 13 overall & our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we continue on! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including  travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. Thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. Thanks from OMGchad & DickDe!

This week I have three new gadgets that were introduced this summer.

First is a lower priced version of the Epson EcoTank. I bought the highest priced version at Staples and love the fact it doesn't need $$ ink cartridges. Mine is going on 18 months and I'm still on the ink included with the printer.

Epson EcoTank ET-2720 Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer with Scanner and Copier. Info via Epson: Save up to 90 percent with low-cost replacement ink bottles vs. ink cartridges — up to 2 years of ink in the box. Each replacement ink set includes enough ink to print up to 4,500 pages black/7,500 color. One set of replacement bottles equivalent to about 80 individual cartridges. 2-year limited warranty with registration. Easy wireless — print from iPad, iPhone, Android tablets and smartphones. Exclusive EcoFit bottle design — uniquely keyed for easy filling of each color. MSRP: $199.99. Available in black or white.

A Truly Advanced Selfie Stick!

Last November on the Giz Wiz I talked about the Pictar Mark II -SmartPhone Camera Grip for iPhone and (some) Android phones. It's a way to help turn your smartphone into a DSLR. It's here: https://amzn.to/2NDBTrA

Now that company, Pictar has devised a totally different kind of Selfie Stick. Recently the CEO of Miggo / Pictar, Rafy David, came by the Gizneyland studio to give us a look at how it works. And here's background info from the company: Pictar Smart Stickis the world's most advanced selfie stick with a 6-button control panel built into the handle, allowing a variety of functions even when the stick is fully extended. You can easily control the tilt of the phone relative to the stick to determine the perfect shooting angle, use the zoom function, adjust image brightness, switch between the front and rear camera and many other functions. The easy-to-use Pictar app offers 20 shooting modes for taking better selfies in any situation. It features a rechargeable battery and comes in 3 fashion colors. The Smart Stick works with the latest iPhones, Galaxy phones 6 and up, and Pixel phones. MSRP is $69.99, and it will available later in September 2019.

Acer Introduces an all aluminum line of Chromebooks.

Acer has been building a wide variety of Chromebooks for years. Their newest line that come into the marketplace July 2019 are the Acer 514 Chromebooks. The thing I really love about Chromebook is the "instant startup. Open the cover, and in seconds you're ready to work. The Chromebook 514 line has many upscale features like all aluminum chassis and Full HD 14-inch IPS screen. The lowest price Chromebook in the 514 line has a MSRP of $349.99. Their top-of-line model has a MSRP of $499.99. This  sleek machine offers a touchscreen display and a great backlit keyboard. It features an Intel Premium processor, 8 GB ram, 64GB of internal storage, micro SD card slot, Webcam/Mic, stereo speakers and USB 3.1 Ports. Acer says it has runs up to 12 hours on a full charge. The sleek case  weight a  touch over 3 lbs according to my postage scale. (Don't forget, although you can do many things with a Chromebook offline, It really functions best connected to the web. If you've never used a Chromebook before there is a small learning curve. Google "difference between laptops & Chromebooks" to learn more about those differences.)

Here are the details of the top-of-the-line Acer 514, the one I had in the studio, Model: CB514-1HT-P2D1:

And here’s an overview of the new 514 line:

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/acerchromebook514

I see it here on CDW for $505, but there's a 5% discount when you sign up for account, which drops the price like $25 if my math is right. https://www.cdw.com/product/acer-chromebook-514-cb514-1ht-p2d1-14-pentium-n4200-8-gb-ram-64-gb/5363320  (I've bought stuff here, but have no affiliation with the company. Price was as of 8/30/19)

Chad's Crappy Corner & his final August theme gadget.

Chad's final “sketchy gadget” is: The Hidden Spy Camera Photo Frame- Nanny Cam HD Recorder - Home Security Wireless Hidden Cameras with Motion Detection Video Only by 1 Eye Products.

Here's what Amazon says about it:Do you want to record someone or something inside your own home with the most discreet and unsuspicious way? This is a NO BLINKING lights HD 1280x960p wireless hidden camera. A beautiful decorative Photo Picture Frame that is also the most accurate and useful Spy Hidden equipment for your home and/or office. A portable decoration that has the smallest tiny hidden cam built-in system that no one ever notices it.

And Chad's take? Chad thought this crappy gadget was very crappy. First off he felt anyone could easily see the photo frame had a camera built in. Then he said the software is awful and the set-up almost impossible to do. Plus, he said, the field of view is so narrow he'd never trust it as a security camera. Be sure to watch Chad's video demo in this week's show. Fortunately, it was cheap.

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I can email an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
