Giz Wiz Show #1524 June 25th, 2015, Thurs. Our 8th Independently Produced Giz Wiz Show!

Watch us record our show live every Thursday, 7:30 PM EDT / 4:30 PM PDT. Next Thursday, July 2nd, there will be no live show. We pre-recorded it so Chad could go off to London for a Minecraft press event. He'll tell us all about it on our July 11th show when we return to our normal schedule. Drop by and watch us record the show and hopefully you'll join our friendly live chatroom. It’s all at http://www.gizwiz.tv/. (All Giz Wiz shows are there too, even when we’re not live.) Since we now produce our show ourselves if you care to back us, click on the Patreon link at that website. And now to this week’s show!

I attended two press events this past week. One was a preview of holiday gifts. Many were Bluetooth speakers, headphones, phone cases, etc. – stuff we’re all seen before. But the Notti and Dotti from Witti were a bit different. And the fact that the display on the more sophisticated Dotti harkens back to the 8-bit display days, it would be an attention getter for the geek office desk, or nightstand. It not only offers notifications of phone calls, Facebook postings, etc., but it can 'dance' to your music, keep you formed of the time, or even let you play the built-in Dice game. More info is in my Giz Wiz video, and at the company website.

A very versatile 3D Pen.

The second event I attended was Digital Focus where I found a revised version of 3DSimo Pen.

I saw a spokesperson working with a prototype of the new 3Dsimo Mini. More than just being able to create 3D designs, it can cut foam, burn designs into wood, even solder! Here’s a bit of info about it from the company: More Than a 3D Printing Pen - the 3DSimo Mini Is The Ultimate Creator’s Tool, an evolution to the original 3DSimo pen. Significantly smaller in design than its original counterpart, the Mini heats up to 490 degrees and works with several types of materials. It’s the perfect tool for 3D printing creations, burning, soldering, foam cutting, jewelry making and much more. Immediate uses include extensions for burning, foam cutting and soldering. In the future, we will incorporate additional functionality to the pen such as like drilling, making it a practical tool for creators of any skill set. The Mini communicates via Bluetooth with a free iOS and Android app which is used to control the functions, materials and temperature on the device. The basic 3DSimo Mini will come with a micro-USB cable to wall charger, 3D printing nozzle and material. The 3DSimo Mini is available now on Kickstarter, starting at an early bird price of $89 for the basic model. (As of 6/25/15)  There’s a short video about the Mini on their Kickstarter page. The 1st hundred pens that were priced at $79 sold out within a few hours of the start of the campaign, so I think they’ll reach their goal with ease.

End the of frustration of plugging in USB Cables wrong-way-round.

Strangely, at both events I attended, I was given product samples of a very similar product, namely USB Reversible cables. And I received another one from a different company in the mail. Why did it take all these years to realize there was a problem with the design of the original USB 2.0 cable? And why did three companies (that I now know of) all come up with the same solution pretty much at the same time? Actually, it doesn't matter to the customer. It just makes life easier when it comes to plugging in a simple 2.0 USB cable. With these cables you can plug them in without thinking because there's no right or wrong way. No more looking at the cable and what you're plugging it into, to figure out if you have to turn the USB cable 180 degrees to make it fit. Either way works fine with these new cables. So here they are three different cables, from three companies that produce the new, convenient 2.0 Reversible USB Charge/Sync cables.

Chad's Crappy Corner and his final "outdoor" gadget for June.

Be prepared for anything on your next outdoor adventure with the Rothco 3235 Adventurer Survival Kit Knife, which comes with everything you need to make the most of your surroundings. The knife is 10.5 inches long, and the hollow handle contains a fish line, hook, sinkers, bandages, small harpoon, signal mirror, finger tip saw, pencil, and more. The blade is 5.25 inches long, and slides into the included accessory sheath, which additionally has a peg for use as a wire-cutter. The handle's screw-off top has a compass, as well, and helps keep all of the valuable contents dry. $25 & Amazon Prime, so free shipping if you’re a Prime Member.

And Chad’s take? It turns out Chad loves survival gadgets and he especially loves this knife because of the things it can do. Help with a fire, cutting wood, a compass, etc. You should watch the video as Chad shows everything that comes with this knife and why it's a good survival gadget. Best of all, it retails for just about $25, and it's Amazon Prime, so free shipping if you're a Prime Member.

We’re looking for more Viewer Videos! We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so let’s go going! You’ll get an autographed copy of MAD Magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture if we show your video, and who knows, maybe you’ll be discovered by a YouTube Talent Agent!

Here’s what we’re looking for: Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv. (NOTICE! This is a new email address!)

Letter of the week:

Chad and Dickie Dee,

Last week Chad talked about doing a Zagat Food event all over L.A.  Which reminded me of some places that I would like to recommend up in L.A., since Chad just moved here.

My favorite restaurant of all time is Canter's Deli in West Hollywood.  They are on Fairfax, and open 24 hours a day.  Great sandwitches and Matzo Ball soup.  Next, Carney's on the Sunset Strip.  It is actually housed in an old train car.  Pink's Hot Dogs on La Brea, over in Hollywood.

And, finally Philippe’s, where they invented the French Dip Sandwitch.  Located in down town L.A.

Question for Dickie Dee.  Is the pizza the best in NY?  Some day I will try it.

Oh, and Chad, if you ever go to the beach, I feel that the beaches in Orange County are a bit cleaner that L.A. beaches.

Thanks for keeping the Giz Wiz alive, Michael
