Three more unique gadgets from CES 2016.

Innovative Technology Powers the 4Moms Self Installing Robotic Car Seat

At CES 2016, 4moms launched their self-installing car seat. Using robotics technology and advanced sensors, the 4moms self-installing car seat auto-levels, auto-tensions, and continuously monitors its status, giving parents the peace of mind that the seat is installed correctly during every car ride. “When installed correctly, car seats save lives. Yet four out of five times they’re not, and there’s no easy way to check,” explained Rob Daley, CEO and co-founder of 4moms. “That’s a serious problem, and we believed it had to get better. We have developed a car seat that not only talks you through the installation process and verifies that the seat is installed correctly, it also continuously monitors the status of the seat. When the parent connects the included carrier to the base they receive verbal and visual confirmation that the car seat is installed correctly and continuous monitoring is turned on. The seat will notify parents if anything is amiss, like a disconnected LATCH or loss of tension, and provide guidance on how to correct. Most premium car seats on the market only have a gravity ball within the base, which require the parent to move their vehicle to level ground for a correct installation. The 4moms self-installing car seat app experience also includes a VIN capture, which enables it to recommend a specific seat position for installation based on the vehicle make and model. There's more info in the CES video I shot and at the company website.

Monitor your baby's temperature even from another room.

The company says that their TempTraq device is only wearable Bluetooth thermometer that continuously monitors body temperature and provides convenient alerts to give parent's peace of mind. It also allows a sick child the rest they need to get better. A soft comfortable patch is placed under the baby's arm where it continuously senses, records and transmits temperature information using Bluetooth technology. The info gathered is sent to a compatible smart device. This allows parents to monitor their sick child from the next room via the TempTraq app on a device up to 40-feet away, every 10 seconds for 24-hours. Alerts will let a parent know when a child's temperature is higher than desired. Parents may conveniently monitor multiple thermometers simultaneously, and also email temperature data to healthcare professionals or family members with one touch. $24.99. They are one-time use patches.

Hackaball contains a mini computer that lets kids invent and play games.

Hackaball is a bit bigger than a softball, and it has a rubber exterior to make it easier to throw, pass around and shock-protect the internal high tech electronics. Inside there's a gyro, an accelerometer, a vibration motor, nine LED's, a rechargeable battery, a bit of memory and a speaker. It connects via Bluetooth to an app for the iPad, iPhone or Mac computer, allowing kids to customize the ball’s sensors, lights and noises so they can make their own games. The connected toy market is worth about $2.8 billion. Hackaball captured about $240,000 of that money on Kickstarter last year even though their goal was just $100,000. Hackaball is now in production and will ship all the Kickstarter preorders in March, 2016. In addition to designing their own games, Hackaball also comes with pre-designed games to help kids get started. The company says additional accessories are planned for 2016, which will allow the technology of Hackaball to be placed in other toys and devices. Although Hackaball has sold out its initial 3,000 toys, another 5,000 are due out n May 2016. The cost is about $89.00.

Chad's Crappy Corner and another holiday gift he received.

Chad emailed our loyal (and much appreciated) Patreon supporters and asked them to pick a January, 2016 theme of the month they would like to see. They voted and picked 'Chad's Christmas Gifts', gifts Chad had received over the holidays. This week, the final week of this theme, Chad shows us three stocking stuffers he received as gifts.

Obviously, a fun-loving family, the first stocking stuff Chad showed us is Lord Phartwell's Hairy Scary Jumping Spider Practical Joke. As the box says: Squeeze the bulb and watch it twitch. Make them scream, give them the collywobbles.

And Chad's take? It's short term fun, but his cat's didn't think so. They seemed interested at first, but then Chad tossed the Hairy Scary Jumping Spider at them and they fled! (Personally, I don't I would like it either. I'm not a fun of creepy-crawly things.) It's about $8 and Amazon Prime.

The second stocking stuff, even stranger. Just to prove no area of STAR WARS merchandise is overlooked, Chad got a gift for his cat: Meet The Leia Cat Hat. Here's what Amazon says about it: Now you can dress your cat in authentic STAR WARS gear, from a galaxy far, far away, straight to your cat. Have your cat running around looking like Princess Leia. This Leia headpiece features details you will love, such as her trademark side buns, and an adjustable velcro strap which fits around your cat's head. This headpiece is also so comfortable your cat will never want to take it off.

And Chad's take: Waffles, Chad's cat will never have to take it off, because it constantly  fell off. Chad showed us that the holes for the cat's ears where too small for Waffles, so it stayed on for about 5 seconds at a time. Waffles is one patient cat, but I think this was a fun cat thing. $12.99 and Amazon Prime, as of 1/27/16.

The Clear Spout Black Collar Measured Bottle Pourer - This bottle pourer goes on a liquor bottle and Auto Measures 1 Oz per pour. Amazon says it helps control your costs and inventory with precision pouring!

Durable, easy to clean & long lasting! Fast or medium flow speed for professional use.

Pours liquor, wine, juice, syrup, oils, and more! $29.95 for a dozen of them, and they're Amazon Prime.

Chad's Take: Wow, Chad poured measured liquor out of a bottle like a pro! Although the reviews on Amazon are mixed with many people saying they were hard to use, Chad showed us otherwise. (Unless he did a lot of practicing.) Chad pointed out they're about $30.00, but you do get a dozen of them. Chad likes them. (But I wonder. Just how much liquor does he have in that studio?)

*********

We’re looking for more Viewer Videos! We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video! IMPORTANT: We'll just shower you with praise for your video if you live outside the US or Canada since we can't afford to send stuff outside of those two places. (Thanks for understanding.)

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week:

Hi Dick and Chad,

I was at home for the holidays, and since my mother is a bit of a hoarder, I just knew that I would find this gem in my bedroom closet. Sure enough, right where I left it, I found it. My MAD magazine board game!

Since I'm Canadian, my edition of the board game is in English and French. I've attached some pictures of the game, including the rules showing that the winner is the first person to lose their money, along with the $1,329,063.00 bill. I can't wait to play again soon.

Love the show and the chat room(s). Keep up the awesome work! Anne (Annetastic)
