The Giz Wiz, Week of Feb. 26th, 2014, Show 1457

3 from the 3D Printer Show!

At the New York 3D Print Show there were of course all kinds of 3D printers. But one that really stood out was the BigRep ONE. This is no counter top 3D printer. The BigRep One is a full-scale format 3D printer with an 1147 x 1000 x 1188 mm (1.4 m³) working volume. In inches that’s approximately 45” X 39” X 47”, or 49 cubic feet of printing volume. While conventional 3D printers produce hand-sized objects, BigRep One can create objects in a full-scale format, like the end table they printed in Germany just before shipping the device to NYC for the printer’s debut. The company says it can be used for printing projects from complex architectural or artistic objects to rock solid engineering parts. You can also print several different projects at one time as long as they fit on the printing plate. But complex devices could take a week or more to print. I didn't have a tape measure with me, but the printer itself is probably about 5' X 5' X 5'. If you're a designer, the BigRep One could be a great asset. For the rest of us, it still might be Ikea for buying end tables. BigRep One should start shipping in April, 2014 and costs $39,000, not including shipping or taxes.

A 3D Printer That Uses A Most Surprising Material.

More from the New York 3D Printer show! At first glance the Mcor Iris looks like a normal 3D Printer. But when you take a closer look you see what it's using as a 3D building tool...plain white paper! You can add up to 3 reams at a time to print anything up to 5.9” high. Surprisingly, the final objects look nothing like paper as you’ll see in the video. The printer is from Mcor Techologies, and marketed locally by Sculptgraphicz. At this year's Euro Mold show in Frankfurt, Germany Mcor announced that the speed of their Iris full color 3D Printer has been doubled. According to Sculptgraphicz, the Mcor Iris is the only color paper 3D printer and that it produces incredibly realistic, high quality strong durable models in over one million true colors from standard office paper at a fraction of the cost of other 3D printing technologies. It is also eco and office friendly, but it does have a big footprint. This is no tabletop 3D printer as you can see in the video. The Mcor Iris is $53,000, but remember, the material you print on is just plain old paper!

A Great Green Effort.

ProtoPrint's IMPACT filament.ProtoPrint's social enterprise started in India, and will be moving to other countries starting in June, 2014. They've developed a way to turn discarded plastic bottles into 3D HDPE Filament for 3D printers. The object is to produce a lower cost “ink” for 3D printers made from discarded plastics, while at the same time earning money for the people who gather and sort the waste. I think it’s a great idea. Here’s a bit more from their website: Protoprint Solutions is a Social Enterprise based in Pune, India that provides low-cost 3D printing services to students and professionals in India while empowering urban waste pickers with the technology and resources to produce 3D printer filament from waste plastic, creating an active system of micro-entrepreneurs. ProtoPrint calls this recycled filament IMPACT.

Chad's Crappy Corner!

Chad did a neat demo of the Add-a-Lock. (Selected with the help of Jeff Needles.) The Add-A-Lock is a portable door lock that can be easily installed and removed in seconds on any door that swings open inwards. The idea is to give you additional security and privacy. It would especially be good in places like hotels, motels, guest houses, even a college dorm. Chad showed us that it doesn’t require any tools to install. He invaded an office, throw out the employee and then locked him out in a few seconds using the Add-a-lock. Pounding on the door from the outside bent the Add-a-lock a little, but the door didn’t open. The price seems reasonable, $20 on Amazon. It's on Amazon Prime, so free shipping if you're an Amazon Prime member.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Video To The Show.

This week's Gadget Warehouse video features the biggest item we've had! Since I believe this gadget is no longer made, our viewer video is a combo "My Favorite Gadget" & "My Gadget Warehouse"! Here’s the email that came with this week’s Viewer Video of the Week:

Hi Dick and Chad (or whoever produces the show)

Here's a video I shot for you this afternoon after I watched the last few episodes in which you were begging for more videos. I hope the quality is ok. :)

http://youtu.be/m-1uT2Qr5vU

If you are short of videos again I can shoot a couple more in the other categories, just let me know.

                                        +++++++++++++++++

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show.

Here’s what we’re looking: Your home shoot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professionally made videos please. It makes us look even worse than we are.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be something you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jason, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz, you will be rewarded with some sort of prize. Like an autographed MAD magazine and maybe even some piece of crap. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video! I think the offer to receive crap & MAD is for the US and Canada only. I'll check when we record this show! But anyone, anywhere can submit their videos for the show!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv

The Giz Wiz Letter of the week:

Subject: Mini Museum...

Hi Dick,

You probably won't remember, but I visited Gizney-Land about a year and a half ago. You and Leo had recorded the episode No means no Polly, which featured Leo's animatronic parakeet. I'm from a magician from Hershey, PA and brought you some chocolate, (that might ring a bell.)

I found a cool item on Kickstarter and it made me think of you guys. It's called the Mini Museum and it's small clear resin block that encases various miniature items ranging from a speck of dinosaur poop to a moon rock to a piece of foil from Apollo 11. And of course, everyone knows when you hear the words dinosaur poop, you think of.....well, use your imagination.

I was in Manhattan 2 weeks ago for a magic workshop and although it was a great time, I was NOT thrilled with the weather. I hope to come up some time in the spring and may drop you a note about coming for another visit.

My best to Dennis, Fairway and Chad,

David Pepka
