Giz Wiz Show 1740 August 15, 2019 Independent Show #222

Wow! The Giz Wiz Show is in year 13 overall & our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we continue on! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including  travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv/. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. Thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. Thanks from OMGchad & DickDe!

This week we start off with three fun gadgets perfect for back-to-school. They're also great for lots of other place too!

The Theft-Proof Backpack, is a great place to start. Need we say it? Earphones & smartphone NOT included.Every year for back-to-school I try to find a unique backpack. This year I found one that not only unique, it's very inexpensive. It's the Poruary Anti-theft Backpack. That's what the hangtap on the bag says. I don't think it's mentioned on Amazon. When I first saw it I thought, “This backpack has no pockets! How do you put stuff in it?” Turns out the main pocket zipper is hidden in the back of this bag, the part that is up against your back. That way there's no way a thief can get to it with you knowing about it. There's a USB Charging port and a headphone port on the outside so you can listen to music or charge a device from within the bag. Easy fits 15.6" laptop and probably some 17” laptops too. More than 10 compartments to keep all your things well organized. Made of durable waterproof and dust proof nylon and oxford fabric. I weighed the backpack empty and it was just about 2 pounds 2 ounces. Best of all, amazing low price. The price for this has been all over the place. I paid under $20 on Amazon. Tthen it went to $29.99, but that can change at any time and it has. As of 8/17/19 it was

$25.99. And that might change to at any time.

Charge three devices at once & design your own 'fall to sleep' sounds too.

It's the new Soundcore Wakey Wireless Charging Clock. Never be late for class! Built-in wireless charger. Just lay your Qi equipped device on top and it starts charging. Two more charging USB ports on the back. Connects via Bluetooth to your phone. (There's an AUX in also.) Full-range stereo drivers sound really good for its size. 10 different sounds, including the FM radio lets you set up to 15 individual alarms. Choose from 10 sleep-inducing ambient sounds or compose your own soothing soundscape using the Soundcore app. (I like rain & I like trains, so I mixed my own train in the rain go-to-sleep sound. LED display automatically dims in low light and can be adjusted or turned off using the app. You do need a smartphone to use most of features of the Wakey Clock. It automatically sets the clock time from your phone's clock. MSPR $99.99. There's was a $20 off check box on Amazon as of 8/17/19, but don't for how long that will be there.

Need more outlets and charging ports for that dorm room?

Meet the APC Wall Pivot-Plug Surge Protector.

It's perfect for the dorm room, or any room that need more outlets and more charging ports. The APC wall surge protector with USB charger ports offers you 4 outlets + two 3.4 Amp charging ports. A nice feature of this device are the rotating plugs, which you can turn outward to accept big transformer plugs. It also has an LED that let you know there's power in the line. It comes a 'Peace of mind $50,000 equipment protection policy' too. To install this you need to have a three-prong two plug outlet. You remove the one screw on the outlet cover and use that screw to secure thisdevice to the outlet. You turn two outlets into four and two charging ports + surge protection. I paid $18. Check the link for the current price.

Chad's Crappy Corner & His Third Gadget For His August Theme!

Chad's new August theme, as picked by our loyal Patreons, is “Sketchy” gadgets. No, not like stuff for artists, but stuff that might used by spies, less than honest folks, undercover agents, etc.

Chad's 3rd Sketchy Gadgets is the RFID Reader Writer, RFID Copier Handheld 125khz RFID Card Copier Duplicator for Door Access Control.

In addition to that long Amazon title, here's more of what they say about it: Wide Application: rfid card reader writer be used range to at home, school, office, factory and other access control needed places. Simple Operatingpress the button "Read" for existing RFID card; then press "Write" to program your rfid card. built-in buzzer and led powered by AAA battery (not included). Handheld Portable: Rfid id card reader writer with one 125khz rfid copier and 10pcs writable em4035 fob keys, portable size, easy to carry out in your bag

NotesHIxD Mode can’t be copied ,such as 125HZK PROX II ,125HZK PROX III, HIXD ICLASS ,all these can’t be copied .Also the encrypted Card can’t be reader,so that you should reference the device module when you work.

And Chad's take? As you'll see in the video Chad tried a wide variety of RFID (Radio Frequency ID) cards, and none of them were able to be copies. And in thinking about it, that's probably a good thing. Chad realized he hadn't read all the copy on Amazon which says something like 'encoded RFID cards” cannot be copied. So what one can actually use it for seems unclear. So it will going back to Amazon. You'll Chad demo how it should work in his video on this week's show.

The one Chad purchased was no longer on Amazon, but this one looks exactly like it and the description is similar. https://amzn.to/2KPBWgT (There are lots of these on Amazon.)  As an Amazon Associate Giz Wiz Biz earns from qualifying Amazon purchases.

This never effects how we rate things since we buy almost everything we talk about on the show.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video On Any Gadget!

Our email of the week is about a year long project that cost over $5,000. You'll see the amazing story in this week's show. Here's the email from Major Frenchy:

Chad , Dick you 2 are my weekly laugh and thank you for this.

I built a virtual pinball machine which uses the body of a Real pinball machine with 3 screens, running a windows 10 computer. There are actually near 2000 different tables including all classics like Attack from mars, Indiana jones and some of the newer 3d tables created by Zen studios.

Here is the link for my video submission: https://youtu.be/hhPKC5vg7KA

I can not unfortunately explain the whole building process but i created a guide and i have a full series dedicated to it on my Youtube Channel. I went all in for this one because it was used in my Tutorial and i was showing people how to add all the bells and whistles. I have invested over 5000$ In this one.

Features : boat Blower fan: this will send air in my face in certain tables.

10 contactors ( this is a mechanical flipper and bumper noise )

Addressable LED ( Lots of them ) / Strobe, Shaker motor, gear motor, Chime

Here's the link for my tutorial if people want to build one:

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I can email an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week:

Like our warehouse video this is also incredible. Our letter writer is Anjie Emmett, who it turns out, is a NASA mechanical engineer. Here's her email:

Hi Dick!

Thank you for the kind words about my video submission (the folding proofing box), and THANK YOU SO MUCH for my autographed MAD swag!! I can’t wait to frame the picture and magazine and hang them up at work J

I’d like to return the favor and send you some swag from a recent flight test that I worked on – Ascent Abort 2 (AA-2). It launched last month, and was a functional test of the Launch Abort System (LAS) for NASA’s Orion spacecraft.

Here is a fact sheet for the test:

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/aa2_fact_sheet.pdf

Here are animations and actual footage of the launch:

And the actual launch:

My job was to make sure that the boilerplate crew module that we used to test the Launch Abort System had the same mass and center of gravity as a manned crew module.
