The Giz Wiz Show 1644 for October 13th 2017, Our 127th Independent Production.

We're well into our third year of Independent Production thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters! If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv/. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. And thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help.

This week we have three new gadgets from Pepcom's Holiday Spectacular which took place in NYC on Sept. 28 2017.

Anker Branches Out.

World famous for their excellent external battery chargers, this time 'round Anker uses one of their batteries to power their new Nebula Capsule Pico Projector. It's about the size of a beer can and offers a range of connect options which include AirPlay, Chromecast, Bluetooth and HDMI. The spokesperson said the internal 5200 mAh Anker battery will power video playback for about 2.5-hours on a single charge. The Nebula Capsule runs on a version of Android Nougat and there's built-in support for streaming apps from Netflix, YouTube, HBO, Amazon Prime and more. The DLP lens can display a screen size up to 100-inches. It can project out of the front or rear, or even up for ceiling viewing. There's also 5W of sound output, but you can't hear anything at a crowded trade event. (Actually, I believe Pepcom does not allow any audio to be played at their events.) If you need audio only, Anker says expect 40+ hours of play time via Bluetooth. This device will ship with a remote, a Quick Charge 2.0 wall charger and microUSB cable. Tyler at the show, told me to check Indegogo for a special price, but all the early bird $199 units were gone when I got to do that. Units for $269 through the campaign were still available as of 10/11/17. The Nebula Capsule has a MSRP of $349 and will in the marketplace by the holidays.

Happy Birthday Polaroid! A new camera to celebrate their 80th birthday.

To celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2017, Polaroid releases the Polaroid Pop instant digital camera. It was at CES 2017, but now it's just about ready to ship and will be availabe in November 2017. No chemicals needed with this camera, uses Polaroid’s Zink Zero Ink paper technology. Embedded dye crystals and heat create the black & white or color image. The prints are 3.5- by 4.25" and for old-time memory sake, feature the famous white border. The camera features a 3.97-inch touchscreen LCD display on the back, which is used to change settings and browse through the 20-megapixel images captured with its CMOS sensor. It offers a MicroSD card slot for storing the digital images, a dual LED flash on the front for brightening up the darkest of scenes, a self-timer mode, three in-camera filter modes, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity for easy sharing to your smartphone through Polaroid’s free Polaroid Print app. The Polaroid Pop will be available in white, black, blue, and red. MSRP $200 10 sheets of Zink paper $10

Craftsman takes two tools that have basically remained the same for decades and re-imagined them both.

Meet the Flex Claw Hammer. Whether you need to hang a picture frame or are trying to pry out an old nail, the Craftsman Flex Claw Hammer delivers versatility and power to the palm of your hand. This combo flex claw features two great tools in one -a hammer and an adjustable pry bar. The claw has 4 different locking positions, so you can customize your leverage depending on the job at hand. Hammering can take its toll on your hands quickly. To try and offset some of this, the hammer has a dual-material handle to deliver some added comfort for blow after blow. This claw hammer is versatile enough to handle simple home repairs to prying stuck nails that just won't budge. The hammer comes in an 18 ounces and a 26 ounce version. MSRP price is $29.99 & $39.99, but they're cheaper than that on Sears website.

These are available on Amazon too, but the prices are much better at Sears, who own Craftsman.

Forget the stand-up and often fall over, or even fall off the worktable tape measure. Meet the Craftsman Sidewinder. It comes in two versions, a 16' Tape Measure, or a 25' foot meassure. Both have a lay flat design and steel tang which keeps them stable when you measure. The "Easy Read" tape takes the guessing out of fractions. It locks until you are ready to retract the tape. The tape measure has a writable dry-erase surface so you cano keep track of your measurements before you forget what they were. The tape measure cases are also slip resistant. The 25' foot version MSRP is under $19.99 and a 16' version under $15.00.

Chad's Crappy Corner & The Second Gadget For His New Theme For October!

Chad polled our loyal Patreon (the great folks who keep our show alive) as to what he should chose for his October them. Their verdict: Cheap Halloween gadgets!

For his second Halloween gadget Chad went back to Spirit of Halloween and bought the Stranger Things Phone.Yes, Stranger Things, as in the scary Netflix show. And as Spirit says: What would Stranger Things be without this signature phone? Add it to your Halloween costume and you'll have the perfect look! And yes, in case you were worried, it is officially licensed. And the website says: “available only at Spirit of Halloween.

And Chad's take. Chad likes this a lot. He points out it made of lightweight plastic, but then again it's only $12.99. But the best part is, this phone can be plugged into your smart phone and used as a handset. (Except if you have one of the new iPhones, you'll need an adapter as Chad shows us in his video.) Also as you hear in the video, the voice quality is pretty good. And when Halloween is over this is still a fun thing to impress people with by answering your $700+ cell phone with a retro phone handset.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

This week, in place a warehouse video, we have a viewer video review of a gadget I talked about on The Giz Wiz a short while back. Here's the email:

Hi Dick and Chad,

This is Linda from Long Island. You might remember a video I sent in a few years back when you guys were still doing the show on TWiT where I showed off my old cell phone collection. I thought I would send along this little review I did for the Inateck Anti-theft laptop backpack you showed on the Giz Wiz a few weeks back.

I am an adjunct mathematics professor teaching at two different colleges on Long Island. As an adjunct, I don’t have an office so I have to carry everything I need with me or have quick easy access to my car’s trunk to swap out materials. This year I decided to go all digital so I scanned all my lecture notes and any text book materials I would need in class (not illegal, I own the books and it’s for personal use) and I use a Microsoft Surface 3 tablet computer while I lecture. So I don’t have to carry any notebooks or text books with me.

I have tried all sorts of different types of bags including a rolling bag I tested out last year. It worked great if the weather was good, not so much in the rain or snow. I always end up coming back to my old M11 tactical pack as a default. So when I saw the Inateck bag on the show, I thought I’d try it.

Here is the link for the video: https://youtu.be/aHyPiVehpZs

I forgot to mention in the video that there was another problem with the battery cable. The fact that there wasn’t much holding in place meant that it was hard to get a good connection between my cable and the access port on the outside of the bag. My cable would remain attached if the bag was left stationary but if I picked the bag up or tried to walk around while I had my phone plugged in, the cable would fall out. This, coupled with the fast charging issue I mentioned in the video, is why I ended up hacking together my own solution and running a cable myself.

Overall I really like this pack. So far it seems sturdy enough. After three weeks of everyday use, it seems like new. Linda N.

From The Giz Wiz: The Inateck backpack is still $39.99 on Amazon, but now it's a 15% discount for buying just one. Be sure to click the "Buy one, get 15% off" link on the Amazon page to get that. It's brings the backpack to $33.99. (This price was as of 10/13/17 and could change at any time.) http://amzn.to/2yigifZ -

We’re looking for more Viewer Videos!

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

-

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

-

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

-

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

IMPORTANT: We'll just shower you with praise for your video if you live outside the US or Canada since we can't afford to send stuff outside of those two places. (Thanks for understanding.)

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week: (Probably the most touching letter we've ever received on The Giz Wiz Show.)

Mon, Oct 9, 2017

Hello. Thank you for your show, it's life saving.s

No power or water since September 6, when hurricane Irma hit us down here in Puerto Rico and later Maria. I was able to find enough data to download 2 of your latest shows parking near a fast food restaurant. The first thing I wanted to have it was your show back in my life.

Maybe you can do a disaster themed episode, showing gadgets for power like solar batteries and water purification gadgets. I don't know I guess I am just happy to hear from you guys.

Thank you for the good times. Ernesto I. Rodriguez
