Giz Wiz Show 1754 November 21, 2019 Independent Show #236

Wow! The Giz Wiz Show is in year 13 overall & our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we continue on! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. Thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. Thanks from OMGchad & DickDe!

This week I have three gadgets from Pepcom's “Well NOW!” event. That's a media event all about gadgets for health & well-being.

You probably wouldn't associate Black + Decker with an at-home medical device, but they have launched Pria,a new automated medication management system. It's designed for loved ones who desire to maintain independence while staying connected to their families. Pria is a voice-enabled tabletop device that can let care givers know if loved ones at home have been taking their proper medication. It verifies identification through facial recognition or a PIN code, Pria before dispensing a scheduled dose into the pill cup. There's a back-up battery so the device can work during a blackout. Pria can hold 28 dozes of medication. It does require WiFi and a mobile phone, iOS or Android. Everything is managed through their mobile app. You can schedule up to 28 medication doses, provide reminder alerts, and automatically dispense medication at the scheduled time. It also provides the user with fast access to family or care givers with a simple voice command. The device has a built-in screen, camera and microphone for two-way video calls. In addition to checking in on medication dosing, you can schedule reminders for other things, like to drink water. It's also easy to video call a family member from afar, all through their mobile app. Now this new product is not inexpensive. Pria by BLACK+DECKER is $749.99 plus a $9.99 monthly subscription fee. For a limited time it is $599.99 with 6 months of free service, for a saving of about $210. The company does not say when that offer will end.

For older pet lovers who aren't to care for a real cat or dog.

On last week's show we saw Aibo, the $2899.00 Sony robotic dog. This week, Ageless Innovation was at the 'Well NOW' event to show their Joy for All Companion Pets. The company says their fluffy pets were developed with extensive input from older adults and are designed to foster meaningful connections through play, joy, and happiness to help improve the quality of life among older adults. They say that their lifelike, animatronic, interactive cats and pup provide a solution for many who love having pets, but are no longer able to manage the day-to-day care of a real dog or cat. Their Joy For All Companion Pet Cats look, feel and sound like a real cats with fur, soothing purrs and pleasant meows. They respond to petting, hugging and motion. The Companion Pet cat is available in three colors: silver and creamy white, orange tabby, and black and white tuxedo. They run on 4 C batteries which are included. The Pet Pup is really adorable and doesn't require walking or feeding, and no leash or doggie bags are necessary. He's about $119. The newest companion is the Pet Kitten, at about $60. The kitten responds to cuddling, petting, hugging and motion – but wait, there's more – it also offers gentle kneading motions and purring technology just like a real kitten.

Chad's Crappy Corner & Another Gadget For His November Theme.

Chad's November theme, as picked by our loyal Patreons, is “tiny cheap gadgets”. This week's gadget is the Fred TRAVEL LAMP Classic Style Phone Diffuser. (It's from the fun Fred & Friends!)

Here's what Fred says about it: Your phone's flashlight can only shine so bright. If you want to both capture and soften the light to read or create a mood, try travel lamp. Simply slip it over your smartphone's flashlight and relax under its warm glow. Travel lamp is made of soft, durable silicone and fits most small- to mid-sized smartphones. Fun and functional $10.95

And Chad's take: Chad thought this was a cute gadget, great for a stocking stuff or as a gag gift. He thought this would be good on a camping trip when you needed a more diverse light than that provided from your phone's flashlight alone. Chad paid a bit under $11.00 on Amazon for his.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video On Any Gadget!

Our viewer video email this week is from Ken and Marie Kovar and it's one of our favorite kind of videos. It's about a tape machine that's over 50 years old and still works. (Well, sort of, as you'll see in their video.) Here's their email:

Here is a short video of one of my first gadgets. The Craig 212 Reel to Reel Tape Recorder.

In the video I play a little of the original demo tape that came with it. It sounds terrible but is kind of funny by itself. This machine is over 50 years old. I used it to record Neil Armstrong's first words on the moon LIVE.

Bonus trivia and related video: This model was one of the tape recorders used in Mission Impossible. The second video is a very short clip of it "self destructing". Peter Graves gave away the secret in an interview. The smoke was from a stage hand under the table blowing cigarette smoke thru a tube

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hting? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I can email an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
