The Giz Wiz Show 1649 for November 17th, 2017, Our 132nd Independent Production.

We're well into our third year of Independent Production thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters! If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv/. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. And thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help.

This week we have three unique gadgets ideas from CES Unveiled 2018, a look at some exhibitors we'll see at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. CES Unveiled was held in NYC, November 9, 2017 at the Metropolitan Pavilion, a very convenient events venue.

Mars Ear-to-ear translators

At the CES Unveiled event in NYC, two companies Line and Naver Corp, (an Internet content service operator headquartered in South Korea) are CES 2018 Best of Innovation Honorees. The honor is for their new MARS Bluetooth-enabled wireless translator earbuds. While several companies are working on ear-to-ear real-time language translation, Mars feels theirs is different. How? According to the company, other earbuds require separate mobile devices and earbuds, or two pairs of earbuds. MARS only require a single pair that can be shared between two people. Using the Naver Papago app, the user assigns a language to each each earbud. From there, two people will be able to have real-time ear-to-ear translation of 10 different languages. (For hygiene purposes I'd carry some handy little germ wipes.) The supported languages right now include English, Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian. But the spokesperson at the show said the company is working on adding many more languages. The system works for both iOS and Android. The earbuds were named a Scheduled for release in early 2018, the suggested retail price (as of now) will be $149.00.

Did you know there's a gadget that lets you pour wine while the bottle's still corked!

Yes, I found that hard to believe too, but as you'll see in the video this user-friendly wine system does let you pour a glass of wine with the cork intact. And it keeps the rest of the bottole of wine safe from oxidation, allowing it to continue to age naturally. To use, click on the Coravin device and a "pouring needle" allows access to wine without cork damage! Remove the needle and the cork reseals itself and continues protecting the wine. Argon gas, an inert gas used in the wine-making process, protects the remaining wine from oxidation. Coravin fits on a variety of sized standard wine bottles, and they even made an adapter for screw-on caps. (That's mostly on the wine I drink.) There a many designs and systems available starting at $199.99. After you use the included Argon cartridge(s), new ones average about $4 to $6 each and are good for up to “15 Pours”.

Key? We don't need no stinkin' key!

If you don't know the name BIO-key, here's a bit of background via the company. “BIO-key has been developing and delivering advanced fingerprint biometric hardware and software solutions since 1993. The companies technology is trusted by the FBI, AT&T, NCR and leading hospitals across the U.S. In 2015 BIO-key introduced a line of compact fingerprint readers that have been tested and qualified to support Windows Hello. Now BIO-key introduces TouchLock a line of smart padlocks and bicycle locks empowered by fingerprint and Bluetooth technology.” In the video you'll see an assortment of their new locks and the various ways they can be opened. I certainly would want a bio-lock that had an alternate way of being opened for days I forget my fingerprint at home, or have really dirty hands.

Chad's Crappy Corner & His Third Gadget For His November Theme!

Our loyal Patreon's picked "Cheap Kitchen Gadgets" for Chad's November theme. And his 3rd gadget of the month is The Hover Cover.

The Hover Cover is pretty clever. It's an anti-splash protective cover to help keep your microwave oven free from splashed or splattered food as you cook. The company says built-in steam vents help heat food evenly. And this is neat: when you're not using it, keep it in the microwave. It's magnetic. Snap it to the top of the microwave and pull it down when you're ready to use it. Dishwasher safe using the top rack. Also Amazon adds: polymer-encased magnets, Food-Safe, & BPA-Free.

And Chad's take: Chad liked the Hover Cover. Watch this week's show to see Chad do a demo video using his own microwave. It did prevent splatter and it easily stuck to the top of the inside of his microwave. Chad bought his at Bed Bath & Beyond, but I also found it on Amazon. When I checked on 11/17/17 it was $14.99 at BB&B.

You can find it even a bit cheaper from other places on Amazon but shipping adds many weeks instead of just 2 days if you're a Prime member.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

Our viewer video of the week isn't an old gadget (not yet, anyway) but a gadget we reviewed on the Giz Wiz a short while back. Turned out it our viewer bought one and it solved a problem that she had with her dog and her cat! And she made a great little video with a full explanation! Here's the email that came with the YouTube video link:

Hey Dick and OMG Chad,

I bought the Catit water fountain after seeing your review a few episodes ago on The Giz Wiz Show. I live in France and was worried that it wouldn't be available on Amazon France. To my surprise was available so I ordered it right away. I can happily report that it works great and solves a problem I was having with my cat and dog drinking from the cascading water in the fish bowl. Now they are happy to drink from the Catit and leave the goldfish alone. The goldfish is happy and the cat and dog are drinking clean water. I made this short video to show you the product in use.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

-

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

-

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

-

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. IMPORTANT: We'll just shower you with praise for your video if you live outside the US or Canada since we can't afford to send stuff outside of those two places. (After December 15, 2017, they'll be something else MAD sent with your Alfred E. Neuman photo. And unfortunately, after that date, we can only send to US addresses. MAD is moving to California, so our supplies will be greatly limited.)

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
