The Giz Wiz Show 1683, July 13th 2018 Independent Show #166

The Giz Wiz Show recently started it's13th year or production, and it's fourth year of Independent Production! (The first show was February 20th, 2006.) That's thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv  You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. And thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. (As we can say honestly “asking for more Patreon supporters is not to make money”, it helps us lose less money doing The Giz Wiz. Thanks!)

Okay, it's July, time for a visit to the annual fun event: Sweet Suite - Tech & Toys!

First a look at Arcade games designed to bring back memories from Arcade1Up

Toy manufacturer Tastemakers was showing their newest 'old tech' Arcade machines. Five different scaled down Arcade1Up machines are set to be released fall 2018. Most contain four popular old-time games from the arcade era. Unlike bigger, like 6' tall machines, these Arcade1Up cabinets are 4 feet tall and weigh a lot less, about 60 pounds or so. Tastemakers says that the machines will offer “the same game play as the originals, with same sounds, joysticks and buttons.” The arcades use a 17-inch LED screen for play and some assembly is required. (There's a video on how to do that on their website.) While full-size arcade games sell in the three to four thousand dollar range, these new baby brother machines will sell for $399. They'll be available in the fall.

Note: The video of the machines we shot wasn't great because bright sun isn't good when you're trying to record video screens, but we have something better! A great video provided by the CEO of Tastemasters, Scott Bachrach.

Chad's Crappy Corner & His Second Gadget For His New July Theme!

Chad's second “on sale gadget” this month is the SanDisk iXpand Base for iPhone Charging and Backup Station - 32 GB.

Here's the description from Amazon: Automatically back up your iPhone’s photos, videos and contacts every time you charge your iphone. With 32 GB of space, the iXpand Base offers plenty of room to save your files in their original quality with no worry about recurring monthly fees for Internet-based storage. Designed for everyday use with a soft rubber top, a sturdy base, and a wrap-around groove to keep your Lightning to USB cable tidy. The iXpand Base is also engineered for convenience, delivering fast-charging with 15W of power and a companion app for backing up and restoring your content to your iPhone. The box was marked $49.99 and Chad paid $25.00 for it, on clearance.

And Chad's take? Chad likes this device, although he's probably going to add a larger SD card. And Chad was especially impressed by the cable management system that lets you keep it handy on desk or table, but looking neat. And of course it's from SanDisk, so you know they produce quality gadgets.

The chatroom added that it looks like the 32G version has been discontinued, but the device with larger SD cards, starting at 64 GB are still available online.

If you hurry, I found the 32GB version Chad bought for even less than he paid! Just $19.00, but only 3 left on 7/13/18: https://amzn.to/2uxfMI9

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

Our viewer video arrived via this email:

From: Adam Jakowenko

Subject: Orbit card gadget!

Hey Dick and Chad,

About a month ago you mentioned the Tile tracker and were talking about other tracking devices and wished there was one for a wallet. Well, here's the one I use, because it's exactly the same size as a credit card. It's called the Orbit (linked below) and you can use it to 1) Find your wallet, 2) Find your phone, or 3) Take a selfie. It works up to about 75-100ft away in my testing and makes a plenty loud enough sound for me to hear it when I'm looking for my wallet. And if the card disconnects from your phone due to being out of range or battery, the app will still show the last known location that it logged. I've used this for all 3 functions and it works great. Also, through pure coincidence, I discovered that this was also one of Oprah's Favorite Things last year, although that's not why I bought it. But if Oprah loves it, you know it's good right? =)

p.s. The one thing I didn't mention in the video that it can also do is send an alarm if/when it gets separated from the phone (I think the Tile does this as well) so if you always have your wallet and your phone together, you can turn that alarm setting on and it will also ring when they get separated from the bluetooth connection and could help you know when you've perhaps left your wallet/ behind.

p.p.s: People also always ask me where I got my wallet cuz they seem to like the pull tab feature, so just in case anyone is wondering that, here you go: https://www.distilunion.com/products/wally-bifold?variant=27569642632

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

-

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

-

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

-

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I canemail an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week:

It's not a letter of week, but info from a press release about a new product that will help those who have lots of HDMI gadgets plugged into their HDTV.

Take a look:

https://caavo.com/collections/accessories/products/caavo-cloth-hdmi-cable-6-ft-barolo-white

There's a 59 second video there that explains it all. I think it's clever, and at a price that not too high.
