The Giz Wiz Show 1660, February 2nd 2017 Independent Show #143

The Giz Wiz Show will start it's 13th year this month! And soon we'll be entering our 4th year of Independent Production! That's thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv/. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. And thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. (As we can say honestly, asking for more Patreon supporters is not to make more money, it's to help us lose less money doing The Giz Wiz. Thanks.)

This week we finish up two final unique gadgets we saw at CES 2018, Chad has a new 'green screen' gadget in addition to his new Crappy Corner theme - voted on by our loyal Patreons! And we have a viewer warehouse video. First, let's finish up with CES 2018.

Here's a watch that never needs a battery. It's powered by your body heat!

The MATRIX PowerWatch is the world’s first smartwatch that you never have to charge. Yes, it's powered by your body heat. And it can measures calorie burned, activity level, and sleep using an advanced thermo-electric technology. It is the only smartwatch to feature a power meter which displays how much electrical power you are generating when walking, running, exercising, etc. And you don't have it wear it 24 hours a day. When you take it off, your data is stored in memory and it goes to sleep; put it back on and the watch turns back on right where you left it. Last year on Indiegogo the company was 938% funded with a total of $1,645,900, so people like this idea a lot. There are 3 models, starting at $199.00. They are at the company website now (2/1/18) and will also be available on Amazon in the near future.

Upgrade your phone, memory and battery power with this new phone case.

The Smartcase, from i-BLADES has magnetic snap-on smartblades to add new features to your phone. It's lets you increase battery life, add memory and a micro SD card slot, plus an air quality sensor. Yes, the Smartcase has a built-in Enviro Sensor that monitors the air quality wherever you are. At CES they announced some new accessories too. They include asmart magnetic in-car holder. Just snap-on to the Smartcase to get instant charging. Rotate the phone easily and securely to any position using the unique 360 adjustable lockable system. They'll also be a smart wall charger. Once plugged into the wall users can snap-on Smartcases or Smartblades magnetically so they can charge wirelessly. And yes, you can stack multiple Smartblades to “Stack-charge” so you can get maximum battery capacity on one charge. Price for a case and a smartblade start at about $99. Strangely, they're available now for many Samsung phones, but are on the way for iPhones. (Yes, it usually the other way around.)

Chad has an extra gadget this week -- a really unique green screen.

Chad said we'd like his green screen choice. And he was right! I'll just paste the Amazon description here because it explains almost everything about it: “Elgato Green Screen — Collapsible chroma key panel for background removal with auto-locking frame, wrinkle-resistant chroma-green fabric, aluminum hard case, ultra-quick setup and breakdown”. And they're right. In Chad's demo, watch how easy it is to set up. Flip open the aluminum case, lift the handle to a suitable height, and let the pneumatic x-frame automatically lock your canvas in place. It stops and stays wherever you want it too. That's the back of the Elgato Green Screen in the photo - it's really cleverly designed. Chad likes this a lot! He also points out that this green screen is optimized for camera chroma keying mainly for gamers - hence they only make the one size, 58.27 x 70.87 in the fully open position. Another thing the chatroom and I were surprised by is the low price, considering how cleverly built it is: MSRP $159.95

Chad's Crappy Corner & His New Theme For February, 2018 is ----?

Okay, so our loyal Patreon's voted and Chad's theme for February is: "Gadgets that works with apps"!

Chad's original choice for this week was the Poof device for dogs. You hang this tag on the dog's collar and it sends info to your cell phone all about the dog's activities. Turns out, Charlie, Chad's dog, had one activity that didn't work at all for the device. He chewed it up and destroyed it! But here's the link anyway, even though Chad never got to see it used the way it was designed. https://www.mypoof.com/

So without being able to use the gadget he planned on using, Chad had to quickly go out and buy something else. And that something else turned out to be a very smart lock with something called DoorSense. It's said to have the first intelligent, integrated sensor that tells users if the door is open or closed. As Chad pointed out, people can be in a rush and leave their homes believing their door is securely closed and locked when in reality, the door is open and the deadbolt hasn’t engaged properly. DoorSense can lock the door when it senses you have left and unlock it when you return - great if you're carrying a lot of bundles. For those in the chatroom who asked about integration with other devices, the company says their August Smart Lock Pro offers support for Wi-Fi, HomeKit, Bluetooth and Z-Wave Plus. August Smart Lock Pro is bundled with the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. The bundle (which Chad bought), is $279 and allows users to control and monitor their front door from anywhere with a smartphone. Be sure to watch this week's show to learn about installing the lock and Chad's experience using it!

From the Giz Wiz: It turns out this 1958 Sony TR-610 Radio is real collector's item: Check this one out on ebay - $65 + $7.50 shipping! And “it doesn't power on”. (As of 2/1/18)

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

-

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

-

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

-

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise. But no matter where you live, I can email an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
