Last of my unique CES gadgets.....StudioSync dual-function shelves. There are two of them. The Studio Sync Wireless Bluetooth Music Shelf which works as both a decorative, useful shelf and as a way to play your music via a pair of Bluetooth speakers installed in the bottom of the shelf. Once you charge the shelf via the included USB cable you can have music for us to 20 hours wireless played via your Bluetooth-enabled device. Here's some more info from the company: Handles up to 60 watts RMS, rechargeable 5-volt battery delivers up to 20 hours of use on a single charge, powers off after 17 minutes of Bluetooth disconnection. The shelf mounts to wall by installing the included 'floating shelf' bracket hardware. MDF construction. Shelf measures 34-1/2" L x 9-1/4" W x 1-4/5" H. The other dual-function shelf is The Studio Sync LED Lighted Shelf. It adds ambiance to room and accent special accessories artwork via two built-in rotating LED lights mounted at the bottom of the shelf. An added dimming light feature helps you control the light, illuminating the room with just a touch. You can install this lighted shelf over your bed, in the kitchen under cabinets or over a work desk. Add creative storage to your home to reduce clutter and brighten up a room at the same time. Recharge from computer with micro USB cord included. Look for them at Bath, Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, and Amazon. The lowest price I could find for the StudioSnyc Shelf with built-in speakers was under $42.00 on Amazon here, as of 2/10/16.

A new version of a clever Smart Charge LED Rechargeable Light Bulb.

Shailendra Suman inventor. Here's a new version of a product I reported on about two years ago. It's the SmartCharge LED Bulb. This smart rechargeable light keeps the light on when power goes out. But it’s different from those lights that go on automatically when the power goes off. The SmartCharge Bulb, which looks like a normal light bulb from the outside, is designed to enable wall switch control of the light even when the power is off. If the power went out when you weren’t home those automatic lights that come during a power outage may have no battery power left by the time you get home. But with the built with proprietary ‘Grid & Switch Sensor technology’ and a rechargeable battery, the SmartCharge Bulb will light when you click the switch when you get home and find the power out. It can keep you in the light for about 4 hours when the rest of the neighborhood is left in the dark. The SmartCharge LED Bulb is capable of distinguishing between a loss of power due to opening of the line switch and a loss of power from a power grid failure (when the switch is either on or off.) The new SmartCharge LED Bulb 2.0 adds a couple of new features. It's almost twice as bright as the original which is 350 lumens. The new version is 650 lumens. But wait, there's more! You can now use 'Charge only mode' which means you can charge the battery without the bulb being lit. As of 2/10/16 you can preorder the SmartCharge LED Bulb 2.0 via the company website. It's on Indiegogo where right now they're priced at 4 bulbs for $75. They'll ship in May. Retail is expected to be $25 a bulb, so you actually get four bulbs for the price of three during the preorder. (I don't know when that will end.) You'll see me do a demo in the video below.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how do I like my new digital scale?

I knew I had to replace my MyWeigh UltraShip scale when it wouldn't zero out no matter what I did. It was going on nine years since I bought it, so I figured it was time to buy a new scale. On Amazon I saw that the Accuteck A-ST85LB Postal Shipping Scale had gotten great reviews. 4.6 stars out of 5 from 589 customers. Features listed on Amazon included Extra Large Display, Batteries and AC Adapter and a capacity of up to 85 lbs with 0.2 oz accuracy. And the price was right, under $24 and Amazon Prime. I ordered one and had it in two days. I installed the shrink-wrapped 9 Volt battery that was included and hit the “on” button. Nothing. DOA. Just in case they took the trouble to ship me a neatly packed dead 9V battery, I tested it, and indeed it was dead. A fresh battery brought the scale to life. It does have a great, large, easy-to-read backlit LCD display. Reading Modes listed are: g/kg, lb/oz. (i.e.1kg 20g, 2lb 3oz). There are also Hold and Tare Function buttons. Then Amazon says this, which I don't quite understand: “Newest Calibration Technology for easy calibration that most scale can not do.” 10 year Manufacturer Warranty was easier to understand. The top flips us to hold large envelopes for weighing as you can see in the photo. Although I've only had it for a couple of weeks, I like the Accuteck A-ST85. Right now, I'd give it a 9 out 10 rating. (Minus 1 for shipping a dead battery.) It comes with battery and AC adapter. And it's compact at 8" X 8" X 3". $23.80 and Amazon Prime as of 2/11/2016.

Chad's Crappy Corner and the new theme for February, crappy office gadgets.

Chad emailed our loyal (and much appreciated) Patreon supporters and asked them to pick a February, 2016 theme of the month they would like to see. They voted and picked cheap and (hopefully) crappy office gadgets.

Chad's pick for this week's show? It's the Mustard A Genius Magnetic Paperclip Holder. Here's what Amazon says about it: “As the great genius once said... ‘What is life without paperclips?’ Okay, perhaps not, but it’s true! Keep your paperclips safe while recreating a gravity defying hairstyle! Magnetic paperclip holder. Fun and unique. Create a crafty hairstyle, while keeping your clips safe.”

And Chad's take?

Although it didn't get great reviews - 2.5 out of 5 stars from 15 customers, Chad liked it, and so did quite a few people in the Giz Wiz chatroom. As you'll see in the video, in use, it doesn't seem to hold as many paperclips as in the picture. However, but then when Chad put on as many as he could and then counted them, it turned out Mustard A. Genius held more than 40 of them. At under $11 Chad thought this was an okay piece of office crap. And seeing, I think it would look good on an office cubicle desk. It's $10.66 with free shipping (Not Amazon Prime) as of 2/11/2016.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

When I visited the NY Historical Society in early February, 2016, I came across one of the most unusual typewriters I ever saw. It was a Blickensderfer typewriter designed by George Canfield Blickensderfer in 1892. I was intrigued, so I went to Wikipedia to learn more about it. And here's what I found: Instead of the common mechanism with letters on the end of individual bars connected to the keys, the Blickensderfer used a cylindrical wheel with letters embossed on it. Pressing a key caused the cylinder to turn so the correct letter was positioned over the paper, and continuing caused it to be inked by a roller as it moved to press down on the paper. The mechanism is very similar to the IBM Selectric design introduced decades later, with the only major change being the shape of the striker. Like the Selectric, one could easily change the typeface on a Blickensderfer simply by changing the type cylinder. The Blickensderfer system dramatically reduced complexity of the design. A typical example contained only 250 parts, compared to the 2,500 parts of a standard typewriter. It was much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than other typewriters. --- Pretty amazing stuff, isn't it? And as you see in this show, we found a video on line where you can see a close up view at the way this amazing typewriter works.

If you want to buy one, here's what looks like an excellent one offered at $450 on eBay as of 2/11/16:

*********

We’re looking for more Viewer Videos! And we them NOW! We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video! IMPORTANT: We'll just shower you with praise for your video if you live outside the US or Canada since we can't afford to send stuff outside of those two places. (Thanks for understanding.)

Hello Dick and Chad,

I know how much you guys love LEDs and while I was at Home Depot looking for light bulbs I came across this odd looking bulb. It was the GE LED Bright Stik (missing a ‘c’) which is a non-dimmable, instant-on, 60-watt bulb replacement at 760 lumens. They’re energy saving bulbs that are rated to last for 13.7 years at 3 hours a day although the limited warranty only lasts 3 years. You’ll notice they have a small profile and take up less space than other bulbs.

I’ve attached some pictures but it is difficult to gauge the brightness, but know that I find it pretty comparable to the CFL that I used to have. The box of 3 that I bought cost $10. They are on Amazon but for considerably more. On Home Depot’s website they are $9.97 http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-60W-Equivalent-Soft-White-General-Purpose-LED-Bright-Stik-light-bulb-3-Pack-LED10S3-96/205783754
