Another 'you really don't need this' gadget from OMGChad

Here's the original post:

North American Healthcare Foot Rocker. This device was developed by sports professionals to help you relieve lower body pain quickly, safely, and easily with a rocking stretch. This one-size-fits-all rocker is designed to position your foot optimally, so that you can work and stretch the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of your foot and lower leg by simply following the foot rocker's three, 30-second stretches. This simple device was developed to provide an effective way to relieve the lower body pain associated with plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, ankle strain, arch pain, and other chronic conditions.

Chad's take on this device: It's an awful lot of plastic and an unwieldy device to do something you can pretty much do without any gadget at all.

A 3D Pen that does a lot -- but it didn't reach its Kickstarter goal.

At Digital Focus I found a revised version of 3DSimo Pen.

I saw a spokesperson working with a prototype of the new 3Dsimo Mini. More than just being able to create 3D designs, it can cut foam, burn designs into wood, even solder! Here’s a bit of info about it from the company: More Than a 3D Printing Pen - the 3DSimo Mini Is The Ultimate Creator’s Tool, an evolution to the original 3DSimo pen. Significantly smaller in design than its original counterpart, the Mini heats up to 490 degrees and works with several types of materials. It’s the perfect tool for 3D printing creations, burning, soldering, foam cutting, jewelry making and much more. Immediate uses include extensions for burning, foam cutting and soldering. In the future, we will incorporate additional functionality to the pen such as like drilling, making it a practical tool for creators of any skill set. The Mini communicates via Bluetooth with a free iOS and Android app which is used to control the functions, materials and temperature on the device. The basic 3DSimo Mini will come with a micro-USB cable to wall charger, 3D printing nozzle and material. Although their Kickstarter campaign did not reach it's goal you can still order the 3Dsimo Mini at the company website as of 12/30/2015. It's cost is $109 for June 2016 delivery.

Here are two more of the weird gadgets Chad showed on the Giz Wiz during 2015.

It looks weird and when it’s in use, in a man’s mouth, it looks even stranger. It’s the GoateeSaver. Here’s some of what Amazon says about it:

The GoateeSaver is an adjustable goatee-shaving template that will revolutionize the way you shave and trim your goatee. The GoateeSaver can be customized to your face in seconds, with three easy adjustments. Just place the GoateeSaver over your goatee and shave with your favorite razor. Note: Razor not included. Just bite down on the mouthpiece and move your razor along the guide. It's that simple. You can easily adjust it to fit your face and to create different goatee sizes, simply by twisting the rollers on the front. Your goatee will look tidy and perfect every time you shave. Chad gave the Goatee Saver to Bryan Burnett to use. And Bryan’s opinion after he used it? Bryan liked the results, he said his goatee looked very neat. He added that his goatee was a little uneven when he it shaped it freehand. But, Bryan didn’t think it was worth $20, and said he’d go back to doing it freehand rather than buying the Goatee Saver. It’s $19.99 on Amazon with free shipping if you’re an Amazon Prime member. It's still for sale at the same link and same price as of 12/30/15.

Chad’s Theme for March is  “What The Heck Is It?” Sound familiar? Yep, it’s exactly like the game we play here on gizwiz.biz. Chad went around the streets of Petaluma asking people ‘what the heck is the gadget’ was he was carrying. There were some pretty way-out guesses, as you’ll see in the video. For the record, the gadget is The SoloMAX Massage Tool and here’s what the company says about it. It’s a unique self-massage tool that offers the user multiple massage attachment options for all of their different types of aches and pains. The user can choose the very popular smooth Roller Wheel attachment for a soothing rolling massage of sore and tired soft tissue, or the one inch Acupressure Knob for more intense direct pressure of tight trigger points. What makes this SoloMAX Massage Tool different? The SoloMax also offers a third bonus option, the three-finger scratcher for scratching those hard to reach places. The SoloMAX is also designed with a quick release tab to easily breakdown the unit for convenient travel.

And Chad’s take? Chad wasn’t bowled over by the device, but he did say, “If you’re looking for a device with a wheel to massage yourself, this is it.”

This is certainly not a 'Worst Of' gadget. But beware of cheap knock-offs.

We didn't talk about this on the show, but I thought it was important enough to mention here. The first 'hover board' or as IO Hawk calls it: personal mobility device, I ever encounted was at Toy Fair, February, 2015. Here's the report from Toy Fair where the IO Hawk attracted a lot of attention. Notice the price too. They told me it would retail for $1799.99. Well, on 12/30/15 I checked their website and it's still $1799.99, but they were offering a 25% discount code right on the site. Yes, you can buy knock-offs for as low as $300, but I feel that the knock-offs cut down on the quality of the devices, especially when it comes to the batteries. Defective or shorted batteries have caused quite a few dangerous fires. Most airlines forbid you to carry a hover board onboard or and some don't even want you to pack one in your suitcase. I also saw several stories of injuries from trying this type of device without body protection. So if you're looking to buy a hover board, check out the latest news about them and stick with the bigger brand names. They are now illegal to use in New York City, so also check your local regulations before you buy one.

Here's my original report:

It’s not a toy, but it was at Toy Fair!

One that was getting an awful lot of attention at the Javits Center was the IO Hawk, which the company calls the revolution in personal transportation.  Basically the IO Hawk is similar to a Segway, minus the standup handlebar and dashboard. The IO Hawk is lighter too, at about 22 pounds. Having ridden a Segway briefly in a huge ballroom at a press event, and just standing on an IO Hawk at the Javits, I'd says it takes a bit more practice to balance on the IO Hawk. The standup handlebar, much larger wheels, plus a bigger platform to stand-on, makes the Segway feel more secure when you first get on. I think there's a much longer learning cuvre with the IO Hawk, but there are things you can do with it, than you can do with a Segway. The IO Hawk goes forward when you lean forward, and back when you lean back. You stop by standing up straight. That's similiar to a Segway. But at 22 pounds you can take the IO Hawk with you pretty much any place. The weight load is 265 pounds and the spokesperson said you can go 10 to 12 miles on one 3-hour charge. There’s one set of lights on the IO Hawk which stay steady if you face them forward, or they blink, if you turn it so they're rear facing. The only indicator on the IO Hawk is an LED battery monitor which you can see when you look down. The IO Hawk is a high-tech device and not inexpensive at $1799.99.
