Giz Wiz #1567 April 22nd, 2016 - Our 51st Independently Produced Giz Wiz Show!

Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters The Giz Wiz Show continues in 2016!

This is our 51st self-produced Giz Wiz Show! If you'd like to support OMGChad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves) just click the Patreon link at the top of this page: http://www.gizwiz.tv   You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. And thank you! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support.

Another gadget I saw at the Pepcom Spring event was the BIG-i. This robot-butler is a 2.5 feet tall, and weighs 26.5 lbs. It can recognize different family members and can be used to control smart home products and appliances. If you want to watch a particular show, BIG-i can tell you it's time the show to start, go into the living room, turn on the TV and tune it to the channel for your show. The company says it can also make voice or video calls, be used as an encyclopedia and even help you find your missing phone. Out of the box it can do a few things, but as it learns about you and your family it will do more and more helpful things. It will launch on a crowdfunding campaign later this summer where you can order one for $699, for delivery by the end of the year. I was told the retail price will be $999.00. Hopefully, you can teach the BIG-i to earn some additional income for the family when it's not in use around the house. There really wasn't much of a demo at the show, so I didn't even both to shoot video. A spokesperson said by the mid-CE Week event, the demo would be much better.

I guess I expected more from the Big-i after seeing a real working robot-butler in Vegas during CES. In doing a web search, I see the butler I saw already is working in a hotel. Take a lot at all this robot-guy can do in this LA Times video. Of course this particular robot-butler is programmed more for commercial use. But he seems to do a heck of a job.

A light that's light enough to travel.

A compact folding LED travel lamp for under $27.00. Hate it when there's not a desk lamp at the hotel or cabin when you travel. Now can bring your own. The Premer LED Desk Lamp has a built-in battery, but also can be powered via USB, or the included AC adapter. It's dimmable and folds flat for packing. It's weighs a little over a pound, even though Amazon says 2 pounds+. It's good for camping too, even for emergencies with up to 8 hours of light on the built in battery. The touch-sensitive switch offers 3 brightness levels. The company says it 950 lumens at its brighest setting, but being LED, it only uses 6W. Built in 1800mAh Rechargeable Lithium Battery. The only downside for me was the charging cable. It special to the lamp, so you have to carry it with you, but it won't take up much room.

A product you probaby don't know about it....

We love the folks at Hammacher Schlemmer because they always find some very unusual gadgets. This one strikes me as very odd, but there are most likely folks who will want this and be glad to know about it. That's why I wanted to make sure people know about it before the mosquito season is in full swing across the country. (Especially this year with the Zika Virus. There are various versions of this garment, but here's the info on the Knee Length Mosquito Netting Socks, exclusively at Hammacher Schlemmer. And their description: These are the lightweight socks made from fine 1.2-mm netting that shields the skin from mosquitoes without the use of harmful and malodorous chemicals. Worn over regular clothing and shoes, the socks protect against insect-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus and Zika, as well as the discomfort of itchy welts. Only available from Hammacher Schlemmer, the socks stay in place with elastic collars that conform to shoes. While standard insect repellents must be reapplied after several hours, the socks provide continuous, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly coverage without DEET or fragrances. The machine-washable polyester stretches to allow freedom of movement while engaging in outdoor pursuits, and is breathable so it won’t trap heat, helping you stay cool even in tropical climates. For best protection, a loose fit is recommended. Olive. Unisex sizes S/M and L/XL. But wait, there's more! There's also the Hooded Zip Up Mosquito Jacket, the Wearable Mosquito Pants, Mosquito Thwarting Camp Shirt and Wearable Mosquito Net Top. They range in price from $19.95 to $59.95.

Chad's Crappy Corner and another gadget for his theme for April.

April's theme for Chad's Crappy Corner is practical joke gadgets. On this show Chad shows one that makes a great 'gag gift'. It's the Ultimate Wine Bottle Glass, the wine glass that holds an entire bottle of wine! Here's what Amazon says about it:

Finally no more judgmental looks from family and friends when you continue to refill your glass. Our Ultimate Wine Bottle Glass holds a full bottle of wine. It truly is a wine glass that fits your needs. Holds a 750ml full bottle of wine. Takes standard cork or decorative bottle stopper. Stands approximately 11.5 inches tall. Glass, hand wash. It was $13.49 with free shipping for Amazon Prime members as of 4/19/16.

And Chad's take? Chad like this wine bottle glass a lot. He even demonstrated that the glass is designed so that you shouldn't get wine spilled on your when you start drinking wine from down toward the bottom of the bottle. Even though you will be tilted the wine bottle even more as the level goes down, there's enough of a curve in the drinking glass to keep it from rushing into your mouth. He also said it was nicely made and did hold a full 750 ml of wine. Just from seeing it on the show, I do think it's a fun, affordable gag gift for the wine lover - assuming they have a sense of humor.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

The link to our viewer video of the week arrived with this email:

Hi guys. This is my daughter's video done several years ago. She is
now 16 and looking at colleges! When I sent this in before it was MUCH
too long. I took some parts out and might send them in later. My video
editing skills are HORRIBLE so I might not. I almost left out the last scene as it it kind of unrelated, but I
thought Dick would like to see the sign on the wall above the huge
slide rule. I think it was an actual stop near where my mother grew
up. (the Bronx)

I'm really enjoying your show. Thank you for continuing it.

We’re looking for more Viewer Videos!

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
-
My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll a tiny amount of fame (hopefully), an autographed MAD magazine and a 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video! IMPORTANT: We'll just shower you with praise for your video if you live outside the US or Canada since we can't afford to send stuff outside of those two places. (Thanks for understanding.)

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
