« We still visit Dick's Gadget Warehouse on the Weekly Daily Giz Wiz. | Main | What the Heck Was It? This week's Gadget Warehouse is the gizmo from our last WTHII? game. »

The Daily Giz Wiz is off the week of March 14th. Then starting the week of March 21st: It's a brand new week - and a brand new Daily Giz Wiz format!

Photo here just to get your attention! We've passed DGW 1300!As we start year six of the Daily Giz Wiz, there are going to be some changes. Not only is TWiT moving to new, larger studios, The Daily Giz Wiz is moving to a new format. The new show - The Weekly Daily Giz Wiz -  will be a once a week show with all the 'old' features you've come to love (or hate.) Every week I'll do one, two or three new gadgets (it's still an anything goes format), Leo will do a Turn The Table Turkey (just dropping the Tuesday part) and they'll be a visit to Dick's Gadget Warehouse every week. We'll still read letters, add some MAD Minutes, and pretty much do what we've been doing on a daily basis. The length of the new show will depend on when we get tired of talking. The Weekly Daily Giz Wiz will make it easier to sell ads (important!), and make it far easier on the poor editors at TWiT who have an ever increasing number of Netcasts to edit. It will be easier for Leo too, the Prolific Podcaster, or the Nutty Netcaster. He'll be doing only 986.5 hours of broacasting a week instead of 987! We'll still record Saturdays starting at 5:15 PM EDT / 2:15 PDT and I'll still join Leo 'live' on his radio show right before the WDGW. I hope (really, really hope) you'll stay with us!

Dick De, The Giz Wiz.

I was here, I'll be there!

Maybe my attention span is too short, but I enjoy the short format. I listen to podcasts most of the day, covering a wide range of mostly educational podcasts, while I work including several of the TWIT podcasts. While I appreciate the ability to delve into a topic throughly, some talked to death, I like the variety provided by shorter podcasts.

I agree with the comment about the shorter podcasts. I can only listen for about 30 minutes twice a day while out and about, and there are other podcasts that I like to enjoy as well, so about 20 minutes for the Giz Wiz is about all I can handle. I have always hated when they have run longer than that. I don't listen to the other TWiT podcasts because they are too long and I don't have the time. If the Giz Wiz will be broken into segments (like when you watch live, with a beginning and end to each segment) it would not be so bad, because there would be a natural stopping place. If, however, it turns into one long podcast, stopping the playback (like when I get to my destination) that is not an "end", loses continuity and when I pick up again, I would have to re-learn what was going on. I understand your need to have sponsors and make money, but I am very disappointed that it comes to this. I have been a listener for many years, but may have to go elsewhere for my tech info. So sorry!

Sad to see the format changing, but good luck with the new show!

I understand the reasons for changing the format and I'm cool with that. But please don't turn this into a 1 hour plus podcast as they are really hard to manage especially for those that have lots of podcasts they listen to.

I am so frustrated to hear this news. I totally understand the need for advertising in the podcast world, but I just don't believe that podcasts can't get advertising for short podcasts. So many podcasts have daily versions, and in fact there is a sense that shorter more frequent podcasts give the opportunity for MORE ad breaks then a single long podcast. Shows that were once weekly (Tekzilla, Totally Rad Show...) went either added daily shows to supplement the weekly show, or changed from a weekly show to shorter daily shows.

Dick, you are great, and I love what you and Leo do, but I just will not have the time once a week to sit down for such a long show....

Please reconsider

Very sad to hear this. I love a new episode each day and will really miss it. :(

I understand the need for ads, however I will miss the daily format

I was saddened by the news that DGW was going to a weekly format. I have a one-hour commute each way and had gotten used to listening to my three favorite daily podcasts: DGW, Buzz Out Loud, and TNT. I would then tack MacBreak Weekly and other various podcasts on the end and listen to snippets if the first three didn't fill the time. I guess DGW will now be relegated to "overflow" status instead of having its former prominent position atop my daily podcast list.

i havent listened to a daily gizwiz in months so i was saddened to hear that you are switching to weekly, i used to listen to DGW (i guess it will be WGW now) every day on my way into work it was a 20 min commute so i could listen to one (the longer ones were always good) , sadly that routine is long gone, you and leo would make me not dread the day (fixed laptops very stressfull)

I barely have time to listen to all of Leo's long podcasts, I get through TWiT, MacBreak and Security Now! and that's all I can do anymore. All the rest end up in the trash can before ever being listened to.

I loved the shorter format of The Daily Giz Wiz because it was something I was always guaranteed to have time for.

The advertisers are wrong.

I am SO bummed out that the format is changing. My commute to work is 19 minutes long so the daily DGW was perfect. I have listened to a DGW podcast every day for the past 5 years. I don't know how I will manage to make it to work every day without you and Leo in the car with me.
