Known as MAD's Maddest Writer, co-host of The Giz Wiz with OMGchad at www.GizWiz.TV, The Giz Wiz on ABC's World News Now, and on Tech Guy Labs with Leo Laporte on www.TWiT.TV.
Motorola Bluetooth Headset On its Way Leo was asked about bluetooth stereo headsets on the radio recently and found some made by Motorola. He's reserving them for TTTT so that Dick doesn't steal a march on him again.
Open-Source 3D Printer Talk of 3D Printers (Episodes 901, 907, 912) got Brian Drake from Gallatin, Tennessee going too. He tells Dick that there is an open-source fabber, called fab@home. Just don't let it on to Colleen, who might start replicating everything in the TWiT Cottage.
Anthony Wood's Six Ventures Anthony Wood, before he started Roku, was involved in writing software for the Radio Shack TRS80, Dreamweaver, ReplayTV, Soundbridge and Netflix. Roku, the Japanese word for "six", is his 6th business venture.
TWiTLive, Coming to You in Every Possible Way Leo reveals that TWiTLive may well be coming to your home on Roku, but at the moment it's still under discussion. Meanwhile, thanks to Colleen, if you have an iPhone, you can watch TWiTLive using the iPhone app USTREAM Viewer, as Leo demonstrates after the show (video from odtv.me):
Podcast Description Opher Banarie gives Leo an instant letter. After Dick covered the Zune HD yesterday (Episode 921), Opher asks if Microsoft has fixed the pet peeve that he has about the old Zunes, that there is no way to read the title or description of the podcasts. Leo checks the Zune HD and can verify that the Zune HD now shows the full title of the podcast and gives you a description, if that is available.
Zune OLED Screen Leo was going to do the Zune HD for his pick tomorrow, and once again Dick has usurped Leo’s TTTT gadget (the last one being the Verbatim Tuff N Tiny in Episode 901). But Leo gets to show off the OLED screen: see the video below (courtesy of odtv.me).
921 on 921: It’s All in the Planning This week, all DGW episode numbers coincide with the dates. That’s how well planned the Daily Giz Wiz is, all thanks to the meeting at the New York City Hudson Hotel in December 2005 when Dick and Leo discussed the idea for a daily gadget show.
Just as Henry Hudson went on a voyage looking for the Orient and ended up discovering what is now New York, poor Dick at the Hudson Hotel thought he was embarking on a gadget show and ended up doing a tragicomedy with Leo.
FM Transmitter for the Daily GizWiz Roger Harmon is a recent convert to the Daily Giz Wiz, and experienced some problem with the iTunes feed. There was some confusion between the Daily GizWiz and the spaced out Daily Giz Wiz, but Dane Golden had that fixed. Roger listens to the shows on his iPod in his car using an FM transmitter, but signal is not very clear, and asks if Leo has a better recommendation. Leo suggests trying one from Griffin (iTrip) or from Belkin (TuneCast 3), but adds that free FM signals tend to be weak in metro areas
Second Longest Show At 34:38, today’s show is the second longest episode so far, still almost 5 minutes short of the longest one, Episode 709, the Energizer Aluminium Alloy LED Flashlights.
Citibank Chasing Manhattan Citibank's Visa Cash Card, made by Schlumberger, was its answer to Chase Manhattan's Mondex card which came out at around the same time. See mondex.org.
DGW Just before the show starts, Leo asks Dick if he realises that Dick’s Gadget Warehouse has the same initials as the Daily Giz Wiz. Yes, of course, says Dick, though he can’t remember when. That was in Episode 115, another piece of information you truly don’t need to know about the Daily Giz Wiz.
DGW Back Catalogue and the Automated Feed John Zengerle (thanks to Dick for spelling out the name), whose other letter was read by Leo in Episode 912, started listening to the Daily Giz Wiz from Episode 200, and has been listening to the back catalogue using Ludwik’s All Episodes RSS Feed (specifically made by Ludwik to make it convenient for new listeners to catch up on old shows - see Episode 627). John was listening to Episode 111, in which Dick and Leo talked about DGW’s release time, and how sometimes when Leo forgot to upload the daily show, he would get a call from Dick. Back then, Leo referred to this wonderful automated system which should be up and running by Episode 1000.
So over 800 shows later, John wonders if the automated system is up and running, or if it’s still called Dane.
John adds that Leo should remind listeners to make donations to the TWiT network.
My World, And Welcome To It In Episode 855, Leo recommended My World, and Welcome to it by James Thurber on Audible. He talked about the TV series that came from it, and the actor whose name Leo couldn’t remember. Rick Barber fills in the details. The actor was William Windom who won an Emmy for his performance in the series as John Monroe, who later went on to play town doctor Seth Hazlitt in Murder, She Wrote.
Murder, She Hoped Leo is a fan of Angela Lansbury, star of Murder, She Wrote, and misses the age of gentile small-town murders, a far cry from current-day CSI’s. Dick did a spoof once on the murder series, called Murder, She Hoped.
