Looking for sound sleep. Read about the new travel Sound+Sleep.
Almost a year ago we talked about the full sized version of the Sound+Sleep sleep therapy system. If you live an urban area like New York City, or any big cities, there's always noise from loud TV's, traffic, crying babies, barking dogs, etc. Now the company, Adaptive Sound Technologies, has introduced a travel version called the Sound+Sleep Nomad. Like it big brother, this is an excellent device to help you sleep through a large variety of noises. But it has a lot of very unique features. Cheap sleep sound machines often save money by using a digital chip that repeats the same computer generated sound every 5 seconds or so. In short order you can find you’re more awake than sleepy because the sound becomes more annoying than relaxing. Sound+Sleep uses mostly natural and lengthy recordings of relaxing sounds so you won’t hear repetitions. But what makes this Sleep+Sound machines very different is its Adaptive Mode. A built-in computer and microphone continuously “listen” for intruding noises such as barking dogs, automobiles, overhead airplanes, or loud roommates. In Adaptive Mode, Sound+Sleep dynamically adds sounds to what the company calls the SoundStory, and automatically adjusts volume to mask or neutral the intrusion. As the intrusive noises subside, SOUND+SLEEP gradually and automatically returns to normal playback settings. The sound itself is very rich and full with its high quality top-facing speaker. More than just a single sound, each of SOUND+SLEEP NOMAD’s 6 SoundStories has a library of dozens of enhancing sounds. There’s a “richness” setting which determines how many sounds are added to augment the base SoundStory. There are also white, pink, brown and fan noises. Other features include sleep timer with gradual off, and an “audio in” jack that let you plug in just about any device that uses a headphone jack. That way you can use the Nomad as an external speaker in your hotel room, etc. Dimensions: 5.37″ x 4.62″ x 2.55″. Weight: 17.1 Ounces (~1 Lb.) Audio cable and USB power cable included, but batteries are not included. MSRP: $149.99. But it sometimes is on sale for about $20 less.
