Giz Wiz Show 1743 September 5, 2019 Independent Show #225

Wow! The Giz Wiz Show is in year 13 overall & our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we continue on! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including  travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv.  You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. Thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. Thanks from OMGchad & DickDe!

And now onto the show!

Since I've been cleaning up 'backstage' at Gizneyland, eliminating old cables that go nowhere and rerouting others so they're easier to find, I decided I'd also get a more up-to-date device to plug them into. Online I found the AmazonBasics 12-Outlet Surge Protector. This heavy-duty power strip allows for up to 12 plug-ins, 4 of them widely spaced for those large transformer plugs. You can attach this to a wall with the handy keyhole mount on the back, or place in a convenient location for quick and easy access to your plugs and cords. The power strip includes built-in nice bright green LED lights that indicate when your devices are protected and your wiring is properly grounded. It also features a power on/off switch that integrates with a 15Amp overload resettable circuit breaker. The surge protector has a 4320 Joule Energy Rating. Finally there are sliding outlet covers to deflect dust, and a durable, heavy-duty 14 AWG 8' power cord. Best news, it's under $20, $19.99. For a two bucks more you can get the device with a 10' cord. There's also a smaller version Amazon Basic Power Strip for $14.99.

It's a flashlight. It's a lantern. And it's a mini faux fireplace too!

After hitting 6 keys on a keyboard, the unpronouncable brand name: HLZHOU was born! You make not like that brand name, but I think you will like the device. Here's the Amazon description: HLZHOU 2 Pack Portable 3-IN-1 Decorative Flame light Ultra Bright Flashlights Collapsible Survival Kit for Emergence, Outdoor Black. Flickering Flames Design: The distinctive dancing flame is attractive, and looks like a real flame. This flickering candle effect lantern will be the best choice as an alternative to candle lanterns. 2-IN-1 Ultra Bright Design: It’s a 360 degree LED outdoor camping lantern, also a flashlight. There is a foldaway handle you can use to hang our lantern from a branch, beam or tent-pole. You can also use it in hand as your flashlight. The press of a button turns the flash light on and off; Pull up the handles to turn on the lantern, fully collapse the lantern to turn off the light, then just pull up again to turn the lantern back on and change to the flame mode light. With over 100,000 hours of led bulb life span they out do any candle camp lamp. Water resistant to IPX4 standard. I paid $15.99 + $5.99 shipping. But that's for two units, so they were only $10.99 each. Check the link to see the current price. And as you'll see in the video, I love these lanterns!! Watch the demo and I think you'll like them too.

HydraLight "runs on water" Flashlight!

Yep, it's the one " As Seen on TV." Here's a bit of the hype on Amazon: ACTIVATED BY WATER: Hydralight 2 in 1 doesn’t need any electric battery to charge, it runs on water and no specific type of water is required to run hydralight, any kind of water: Regular, Distilled or salt will do the job, 2 IN 1 Design: You don’t have to buy both flash light and lantern separately. Hydralight becomes flashlight and lantern. Just dip the fuel cell for 10 to 12 sec in water, shake it off, and then we're set to go, with up to 100 continuous hours on a single water dip. And it has a 25 year shelf life.

And now the downside you don't read on the package. OMGchad said he and some of the TWiT gang learned a lot about fuel cells when he worked at the Brickhouse. The one that I never knew and will affect how you use this flashlight is this: Once activated, a fuel cell can't be turned off. So whether your flashlight is "on" or "off" the fuel cell is active. So the 100 hours of use means 100 continous hours! Basically your flashlight works for 4 days plus, then the fuel cell has to be reactived. Do this 3 times and the fuel cell is used up. A new fuel cell was $13.55 on 8/31/19! Reviews are not great on Amazon, and I'm going to return mine not only because the description doesn't mention needing to buy fuel cells that are more than half the price of the original flashlight, but because I paid for an extra fuel cell (only about $3 extra) but they did not include it.

Chad Crappy Corner & His New September Theme As Voted On By Our Loyal Patreon Supporters.

Chad's September theme, as picked by our loyal Patreons, is “Emergency” gadgets or “Cheap Gadgets to use in Emergencies”.

And Chad's first Emergency Gadget gadget is--- ???

(It may look familiar!)

It's the Hydra-Light “Runs on water” flashlight!

Yes, for the first time in Giz Wiz Show history we both picked the same gadget to demonstrate on the same show! This really proves we never confer about gadgets before we record the show. We like everything to be a surprise. And this week discovering bothof us  picked the same about $20 gadget was one of the biggest surprises ever. But, as you'll see in this week's show, even with all the downsides we discovered about the Hydra-Light flashlight, Chad plans to keep his for emergencies. Me, I returned mine & asked for a replacement that came with the extra fuel cell I paid for. Amazon sent me a new Hydra-Light again without the extra fuel cell I paid for. It's going back for a refund.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video On Any Kind Of Gadget!

Our warehouse viewer video is from Jeffrey Slomovitz, a fan who has sent us fun warehouse videos before. This video is fun too, showing us an old-time mechanical bank + a slightly more up to date battery operated 'robot' bank.

Here's Jeff's email:

I wanted to send you this YouTube video for the Gadget Warehouse my son and I filmed.

I call it a “blast from the past”

Take care,

Jeffrey Slomovitz

In the photo is the old-time mechanical bank. You'll see his 'newer' old Radio Shack back in his video.

 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I can email an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week:

Dear Dickie Dee and Chad,

Nowadays a lot of people have their own favorite app that they like to play on their android tablets or phones or their apple iphone or ipad. When I was younger I had my own favorite app. My grandfather and I used to play this app all the time. It was a blackjack game. The computer this was played on was the Casio Calculator with Blackjack game. Okay well I mean a calculator is technically still a computer and back in the day the blackjack game was our form of the apps they have now. I also have a story about the app. I was playing the game once and I let my grandfather know that I found a glitch in the program. I found that whenever you were dealt a hand of two cards that were less than 10 you could stand and you would automatically win. I guess even with calculators there were still bugs in the programs. Here is a picture of the "computer" where I would play my favorite app.
