The Giz Wiz, Week of May 14th, 2014, Show # 1468

For the rest of May on The Giz Wiz, it's going to be Great Gadgets From The 2014 National Hardware Show.

First off, a paper pad that lets you makes notes in the rain, in the surf, in the shower, pretty much any wet situation.

As you’ll see in the video we shot, Rite In The Rain is all-weather writing paper. It sheds water and enables you to write anywhere, in just about any weather. As I walked through the Las Vegas convention center I saw a Rite In The Rain writing pad sitting in a bucket with water running over it. Then I watched one of guys in the booth write on the pad with the water still running over it. Pretty neat! Here’s how it works according to RITR: The 100% recyclable wood-based paper sheds water, moisture, dirt and grime and myriad of other substances allowing you to continue to write on your notepad or copier paper. Ensure your project stays productive and insure your data! And the answer to my question: Do I need a special pen? Pencil works best. A pen that will work in wet environments will also work fine on RITR. Using a pencil or all-weather pen, Rite in the Rain ensures that your notes survive the rigors of the field, regardless of conditions. Cost depends on the size of the pad but ranges from about $5 to $16.

An easy way to find your keys in your purse or backpack.

This fun device has been around for a while, but this is the first time I saw them at the National Hardware Show. Finders Key Purse is a clever idea, especially if you’re a woman who’s tired of losing your keys at the bottom of your purse. (It can work on backpacks too, so guys can find their keys quickly too.) With a wide variety of Finders Key Purse designs available, this doesn’t have to happen any more! The Finders Key Purse is designed to hang at the top of your bag, backpack, etc. so you can find your keys instantly. The company says their Finders Key Purse key finders are top quality and display colorful, dimensional designs on the outside of a purse, bag, or backpack while keeping keys safely on the inside, easy to find every time. No more dumping and digging! Finders Key Purse not only save time but also help keep your head out of your purse and keys quickly available so you can feel more secure when walking to your car or your door at night - keys within easy reach. There’s a wide variety of designs, from plain and simple for men, to very decorative for women.

A neat, new way to stick things to other things.

Glue Dots are great fun to use! They’re a mess-free, easy-to-use solution to everyday bonding needs. Glue Dots come in different strengths, sizes and formats. They require zero dry time before you use them. The company says that consumers have found endless uses for Glue Dots around the home, school, and office, from household decorating to science projects to quick repairs. The Glue Dot product line includes Craft Glue Dots, Mini Glue Dots, Micro Glue Dots, Ultra Thin Glue Dots, Pop Up Glue Dots, Removable Glue Dots, Permanent Glue Dots, Poster Glue Dots, XL Glue Dots, XXL Glue Dots and Glue Lines. There are even more unique product formats such as Glue Dots rolls, sheets and dispensers; both permanent and removable. A new refillable Desktop Dispenser is now available and that’s what I’m using in the video. Prices start at about $5.

Chad's Crappy Corner! But it might be good. (Might be.)

Continuing with this month’s theme of “things that light” Chad has picked something that looks neat, 12 LED Decorative Ice Cubes. Amazon says they have one-push button to change functions, they’re water submersible, and multi-color: blue , green , purple, etc. It also says “rechange battery”, so I don’t know if that should read “rechargeable” or not, but we’ll find out from Chad. $7.77, not Amazon Prime, but free shipping.

And what did Chad think of them? Chad thought they were pretty neat looking, but he wondered about how well they were made. His thought was NOT to put them in drinks for guests because he thought they might leak whatever is in them. Also one arrived 'dead' and wouldn't light at all, and another one pretty much died on air. But as a way to decorate for a party, a few of these in glasses blinking on and off would look pretty neat. By the way you don't actually use these as ice cubes and they don't go into the freezer. And the cost isn't bad, $7.77 for a dozen.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse. And how to submit your video to the show.

This is a viewer video, just not a "gadget warehouse" video. But since it's a gadget I might have found at the National Hardware Show, I thought this was a perfect place to use it on the show!

A viewer’s video always comes with an email, like this one:

Here's a great device that was designed for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, but has break hunting and camping applications at home.

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show

Here’s what we’re looking: Your home shoot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be something you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jason, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you will now be awarded with some sort of prize. Like an autographed MAD magazine and some piece of crap. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv

Letter of the week:

Have you ever wondered what you might get if you submit your own video to The Giz Wiz Show, and we included it on the program? Wonder no more! Ashkan Ardalan whose video we did use made his own ‘unboxing’ video to show what he 'crappy stuff' he received. Actually, the stuff was pretty good. And no, he doesn’t get more stuff for sending us a video of the stuff we sent him for his other video! But it was fun to see. Here’s his email and his video:

Hey Dick and Chad and the gizwiz gang :)
