Giz Wiz Show #1787 July 9, 2020 Independent Show #268

This is our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we're now going into year 15. If it wasn't for our supporters the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: www.gizwiz.tv.

We start the show with a “Guess The Gadget”.

If you show these odd shaped things to someone, it would be hard to figure out what they are. But as you'll see in the video, they're LED Flashlight Gloves. On the Amazon website page I was on, they were two pair for roughly $15.00 or $7.50 each. I got 2 pairs of LED flashlight gloves and 2 screwdrivers for opening the 2 button cell battery compartment. The idea is to wear them sort of as portable flashlights. There's an on and off button and 2 LED lamps on the forefinger and thumb of each glove. Since they're worn on your hands there's no need to hold a traditional flashlight so doing chores in the dark should be easy. They come with no instructions, but fortunately there's the photo on Amazon which makes it easy to see how to wear them. The description says the gloves are made of comfortable, soft, breathable cotton material - that hand washing will not affect normal use, but it can not be soaked in water for a long time. Although it also says 'LED gloves last about 30 hours' they're talking about the batteries which you can replace. I opened one battery compartment with the included screwdriver and find each glove uses two CR2016 batteries which are easy to find on Amazon.

A Chad Extra - And It's Not A Crappy Gadget!

The folks at Anker wanted us to be among the first to install and check out the brand new Eufy Security Smart Lock with Touch Fingerprint Scanner, Keyless Entry Door Lock, Local Bluetooth Electronic Deadbolt and Touchscreen Keypad. The company says the Smart Lock recognizes your fingerprint in just 0.3 seconds, and unlocks your door in 1 second. Certainly faster than fumbling for your keys. There are 4 Ways to Unlock: Open in an instant using your fingerprint, unlock via the eufy Security app with Bluetooth, or by using either the electronic keypad or the key. Automatic Locking means a built-in sensor detects when your door is closed and locks it automatically, keeping your home secure even when you’re in a hurry.

And Chad's take? Chad likes this lock and confirms it opens really fast in his video on this week's show. He also like that it stores your fingerprint and in-app data locally—rather than on the cloud. That's a better way to keep your personal information safe and private. He also said installation was pretty easy. You'll see the whole story on this week's show. MSRP: $249.99

The Giz Wiz Becomes The 'Sand Man'.

The saga of having the brownstone where the Giz Wiz studio is converting from oil heat to gas heat continues. All the big equipment needed in the basement has to through my apartment into the backyard and then down the basement. To get the new water heater in they had to take off my front door, back door, and security gate. Two of the three were put back properly, but the back door didn't close right. So I set out to sand it down myself with my eletric drill and the SIQUK 200 Pcs 2 Inch Sanding Discs with 1 pc 1/4 Inch Shank Backing Pad and 1 pc Soft Foam Buffering Pad. This is a lot for under $15.00. The package includes 200pcs sanding disc pads, 10 grits, 20 pieces for each grit: 80/ 180/ 240/ 320/ 400 /600 /800 /1000 /2000 /3000; 1pc 1/4" shank backing pad and 1pc soft foam buffering pad, large quantity to meet your different polishing need. All of the aluminium oxide abrasive pads have a hook and loop back which them really easy to use. The 2 inch pads are suitable for most kinds of rotary tools and were a perfect fit for my electric drill. Under $15.

Chad's Crappy Corner and His New Cheap Gadget Theme for July.

A perfect choice for Chad's July Cheap Gadget Theme as picked by our loyal Patreons is “Cheap Summer Solar Gadgets”.

Chad's second summer gadget is the Tedco Solar Balloon. The description says using this solar balloon teaches kids the Bernoullis Principle and Pascals Principle, whatever that is. It aslo says the large balloon impresses kids and adults too. I was impressed as Chad unrolled this huge balloon bag. According to the company, the solar balloon measures 50 feet long x 29 inches diameter. Chad paid about $20.

And Chad's take: Watch this week's show because you'll see why a 50' long balloon is a lot to handle on a windy day! But all in all Chad thought kids and adults too could have a lot of fun with it for under $20.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up
hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
-
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
-
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
-
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
-
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific! If you submitting warehouse videos for a second, third time, etc., you'll get the current issue of MAD as a thank you.

All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Email of the week: Via Ken Schechter

Hi Dick,

You may get other similar responses to this regarding your new backyard vent. I’m retired Navy and on ships that type of vent is nicknamed “Charlie Noble”.

From Wikipedia: “Around 1850, a British merchant service captain, Charles Noble, upon discovering that the stack of his ship's galley was made of copper, ordered that it be kept bright. From then onwards the ship's crew then started referring to the galley smokestack as the "Charlie Noble". Other vents from storerooms, engineering spaces, etc were eventually also called Charlie Nobles. As a gag, new crew members were often sent about the ship to deliver a message to Charlie Noble. There’s a photo of another version.

Enjoy your new Charlie Noble. Ken Schechter
