Giz Wiz Show #1501! Three More New Gadgets from CES 2015.

Have a thin laptop, but a fat powerbrick that you to carry for power?

When you get a thin, easy-to-carry-notebook computer, you’re often forced to carry a large, ungainly looking power supply to charge it. At Showstoppers, a company called Zolt changed that with a new laptop charger that they say is the world's smallest and lightest. Dubbed the Zolt Laptop Charger Plus, it’s actually more than a power brick for your computer. The top of the Zolt has 3 USB ports built in that allow it to charge multiple gadgets at the same time. One USB port can power your laptop, (up to 70 watts, which company says is about 90% of all laptops) while the other two can charge other USB devices, like your smartphone, and tablet. At three inches long, 1.3” in diameter and weighting just three ounces, it is the smallest I’ve seen. Available in three colors, it also features a fold-down plug that rotates 90º to squeeze into tight spots. 110V to 240V voltage. The Zolt Laptop Charger Plus ships with a 6ft. laptop charging cable, 7 Interchangeable PC tips and Travel Pouch. Retail price when it’s available in Spring, will be $99.99. It’s available for preorder for $79.99.

You've heard of a kangaroo, but how about mamaRoo?

The mamaRoo still moves like you do says 4Moms, the company that makes this device. Here’s what else they say: Now with an updated interface, locking toy bar, and speeds 50% faster. Choose from 5 unique motions and 5 different speeds from the easy to use LCD display. Select any one of 5 nature sounds or connect any MP3 player. The seat reclines to allow baby to lie back and relax or sit up and play. The nylon seat is machine-washable and easily zips in and out of your mamaRoo. The mamaRoo is meant for babies from birth to 25lbs (usually about 6 months), or until they start to sit up unassisted. The five motions available via the mamaRoo are car ride, wave, rock a bye, tree swing and kangaroo. The spokesperson at the show told me they analyzed the various ways moms comfort babies with movement and incorporated them into the mamaRoo. New also is the ability to control motion and sound with your smart device via Bluetooth. See the company website for devices mamaRoo is compatable with. And I asked, its AC powered, not battery driven. List price is $240. to $270, but discounts may be available if you do a web search.

Chad's Crappy Corner and another "multipurpose gadget"!

OMGChad seems to be going uncovered with his two picks for this week's show!

Be well-dressed and prepared like a secret agent with Titan Multi-Tool Collar Stays. These featherweight titanium collar stays keep your collar looking sharp, and are virtually indestructible. Conveniently fix gadgets, eliminate loose threads, and open bottles at a moment's notice. Feel confident that you'll be suited to handle unexpected situations as they arise. $50.

And Chad's second pick:

Double Agent Magnetic Cufflinks were created to enable the easy opening and closing of Single Link Cuffs and French Cuffs. The innovative two-piece design allows them to be attached to the cuff before the shirt is put on. The magnetic/snap closure ensures that the two cufflink halves will find each other and align into a secure lock. Open and close your link cuffs with ease. $100!!!

And Chad’s take?  Although both these gadgets are very expensive, Chad loved them. He wished he could afford to be wearing something like this and imagined a friend having a button, or sewing emergency at a party. Chad would be able to jump right in and save the day with either his double agent multi-tool collar stays or his Exuvius special buttons!

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How To Submit Your Video.

Go back five years....do you remember...The WikiReader?

The WikiReader is the portable version of Wikipedia. You don't need a computer, smart phone, WiFi, or anything electronic to use it. Pocket sized at about 4” x 4" the WikiReader has just 3 buttons, and an on/off switch. The interface is pretty basic and the instructions are even more basic. Turn it on, type what you’re searching for on the virtual keyboard and you’re on your way. After playing with the Random button for a few minutes information about a parental lock that isn't mentioned in the manual came up. Maybe that's supposed to be part of fun. Your searches are saved in “history”. If you press the "History" button twice you have the option to save or to erase your browsing history. That's not mentioned in the instructions either. The device has a removable 4 GB MicroSD card which I discovered when I checking if the WikiReader could be updated. The instructions do tell you that the "Search" button serves two functions. One push brings up the virtual keyboard and the second push hides the keyboard and returns you to the previous screen. The virtual keyboard is a bit tiny and I miss having the key you hit enlarge for a split second as confirmation that you hit the proper one. And from time to time touch detection gets stubborn and you have to hit a key or a link within an entry a few times before it goes to where you want it. Reading on the monochrome screen isn't bad and you get to pick different contrasts and type sizes when you first start typing. Also the WikiReader shows only text, no pictures or photos. It’s not backlit so you to be in a lighted place in order to read the screen. Two AAA batteries that are included power it. The company says you can expect about 90 hours of battery life, which is probably several months or more depending on how often you use the device. Automatic shutoff after several minutes of inactivity helps extend battery life. The WikiReader can be updated for free via the WikiReader site by taking out the MicroSD card from the battery slot and connecting it to your computer. I believe the site said that it can take many hours for the updated 3 million entries to be downloaded! Or you can pay $29 (+shipping) to have a new 8 GB MicroSD card with updated content sent to you twice a year. That’s an easier way and it’s not a bad price since it includes two 8 GB SD cards. Price is $99.

And today? Most of the links for the WikiReader are dead. But you can still find it here and there on line for anywhere from $15 to $40. But now that you can buy a complete tablet for $99, you can just use the ever updating Wikipedia online, assuming you have WiFi. So the WikiReader has a short life a few years, probably about average as most gadgets go!

We need more Viewer Videos! We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so let’s go going!

Here’s what we’re looking for: Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jeff Needles, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you will now be awarded with some sort of prize. Like an autographed MAD magazine and some piece of crap. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv
