Giz Wiz Show 1713 February 8, 2019 Independent Show #195

This month of February, The Giz Wiz Show starts it's 13th year of production, and the fifth year of Independent Production! (The very first Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we continue on! If it wasn't for them, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you'd like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: http://www.gizwiz.tv. You can also contribute just once via the PayPal link that's there too. Thank you for doing that! Our show wouldn't exist without our viewer's support, but a bit more support would be a big help. Thanks from OMGchad & DickDe!

We start with a bargain priced device that will still be at that price when you read this! First, here's the info on the Joby GripTight Micro Stand.

I recently bought the Amazon Fire 8 tablet, which I want to use on my boat to watch videos. I have a dozen stands for phones, but nothing for a small tablet. So when I got this info from BH Photo, it sounded like the ideal solution. “The black GripTight Micro Stand for Smaller Tablets from JOBY provides a compact stand for smaller tablets 3.8 to 5.5 wide with or without a case attached. Paired with the zinc-aluminum folding legs of the Micro Hybrid tripod this stand enables you to position your tablet in the desired viewing angle regardless of whether you're watching a movie surfing the web or setting up for a photo shoot. Tilt (degrees) +36/-36. Lightweight at 3.9 oz and with a slim profile you can easily take the GripTight Micro Stand with you.” Perfect, I bought one, not for the MSRP of $29.99, but for $7.95 with free shipping. It includes the micro tripod that I've seen selling by itself for $11 to $15.00. This deal was still $7.95 on Saturday, 2/9/19. (BH Photo is closed on Saturdays, but you should be able to order it online as I did. There's tax in NYC, but they shipped it free to me.)

A preview of gadget coming this summer that we saw previewed at CES 2019.

Back to CES for a preview of the MyCharge Power Lumens Power Bank.

Since these two devices are not coming out till summer there's not a lot of info on them. But you'll see exactly what they'll look like on this week's show. Here's what we found out so far: The Power Lumens Power Bank, will be available in 10,000mAh and a 20,000mAh version. Each one also features a built-in LED light that offers four levels of brightness and six different settings. They also can change from 'daylight' to 'warm' light by holding the power button down. Each one of them also has two USB-A charging ports so now you can power your camera and provide light while shooting video at the same time. The Power Lumens Power Banks also feature a convenient metal easel so you can prop it up and directing the light where it is needed. The price is not yet determined, but they should be out by summer. They're not on the company website as of 2/9/19, so check back.

Chad's new Crappy Corner Theme for February as picked by our loyal Patreon members!

Our loyal Patreons voted and they picked “Cheap Garage Gadgets” as Chad's Theme for February. Chad's first cheap gadget is the Empire Mag Clean Magnetic Pick Up.

Chad bought his at Home Depot, and here's a bit of what they say about it: The Empire 40 in. Black and Silver adjustable Magnetic Clean Sweep feature a rolling design and an adjustable head. The clean sweep has an aluminum shaft that can be extended to 40 in. Adjustable angle. The 11-1/2 in. magnetic head provides more coverage. Lifts nails, screws, nuts, bolts and small machined parts.

And Chad's take? He liked it. He thought it picked up magnetic screws, nails, clips, etc. very quickly and gathered quite a few of them in one sweep. The adjustable handle was good too because it folded down for easy storage. Chad thought it was a bit on high side price wise- he paid almost $29.00 at Home Depot. Of course if you do a web search you can most likely find it a bit cheaper.

It's also here on Amazon for about $29.00: https://amzn.to/2SJFxDfAs an Amazon Associate Giz Wiz Biz earns from qualifying Amazon purchases.

This never affects how we rate Amazon gadgets since we mostly buy everything we review.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How to Submit Your Viewer Video.

This week you'll see another CES “amazing gadget” from the past that seemed to go nowhere. The Tethercell was introduced at CES 2013. It's was a great idea. It let you turn ordinary AA-battery-powered devices on and off remotely. Basically you inserted a fresh AAA battery into the specially AA shaped Tethercell that contained Bluetooth and other special circuitry. You replace one AA battery with the Tethercell in the device you want to control. No matter how many AA batteries are required to run the device, you only need one Tethercell. Once installed you could use the Tetherboard app to control that device from any iOS or Android Bluetooth compatible smartphone. Well, that was how it was supposed to work. It took more than a year before there was a “working” Tethercell battery available. In 2014 Chad showed us how the Tethercell performed (which wasn't very good) and you'll see it again on this week's show. (And you see get to see what Chad looked like over 5 years ago!) The company website is no longer in operation, but the chatroom found a very similar device on Amazon for the same price as the original Tethercell, which was/is $35.00. There are only 3 so-so reviews for the newer MaBeee MB-3002WB Smart Battery Controller.

********************************

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show, so here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

-

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

-

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

-

My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.

-

Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 35-year-old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live, I canemail an autographed to you Alfred E. Neuman photo if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!
