On this Tuesday Leo couldn’t find anything to talk about. He even misplaced his backup 2 X 4 he threatened to make his pick someday. So looking around TWiT Cottage he found his original 5GB iPod. Even though that sounded like something that belonged on a Gadget Warehouse Friday, I thought it would be fun to let Leo do a gadget from his past. It was Leo’s 1st iPod from late 2001. It had 5GB of memory and cost just $399! I had this unit too and I remember showing it on World News Now. Liz Cho, the host of the show at the time couldn’t believe it when I said the iPod – about the size of a deck of cards - had a 5 GB storage capacity. More amazing for the time, he could hold over 1,000 songs! Back then the first iPods worked only on Macs. But in a short time you could get one formatted to work with PCs. Leo said the first click wheel, clicked for a reason. Apple had installed a speaker whose sole purpose was to make the “clicking” sound when you turned it. And yes, the wheel actually did turn on those early models. But that turned out not to be a good idea, especially if you went to the beach or anyplace where sand or dust could get under the wheel. Later it became a virtual click wheel. The iPod was an instant success. By the end of 2001, Apple has sold a total of 125,000 iPods. I remember reading that as late as 2009 you could still buy an original iPod from Apple if you wanted to. Maybe you still can. But why would you?
