Dick's Gadget Warehouse & How To Submit Your Video & Get An Autographed MAD Magazine!

Now that the gym is closed I exercise at home, usually watching free YouTube exercise videos. To add a bit of weight I remembered something from more than 10 years ago, the Knife & Forklight! I still had them at the warehouse. Here's the story:

For years we’ve been told that you if you slow down while eating you won’t eat so much. True or not, here’s something that will slow down even the fastest eater and give them a bit of exercise at the same time! The Knife and Fork Lift is a combination of utensils and dumbbells! Yep you read that right! These dumbbell utensils can serve as a constant reminder that eating puts weight on and requires exercise to take it off. Lifting food with these utensils is like doing curls with dumbbells because each one weighs 1.5 lbs! So if you’re cutting a piece of steak with the knife & fork you’re working with 3 pounds of stainless steel. Knife and Fork Lift’s inventor, Tom Madden says. “Everybody approaches it as a joke, but when you think about it, it does require you to eat more slowly.” Eating more slowly, say many health experts, allows the brain time to register feelings of satiety, resulting in eating less. That’s why Tom came up with a knife and fork encased in a dumbbell-shaped handle. I ate with these things and you definitely feel you’re lifting some weight! They’re beautifully made and can be used a table centerpiece if you don’t want to actually use them. They can stand on end as a silent reminder to slow down and chew! Heck, there's even a medical warning about using them to exercise on the company website! And now there's a newly added matching spoonlift.

UPDATE: The website link below still works 10 years later. But the inventor is looking for investors and is not selling the product himself anymore.

    http://www.knifeandforklift.com/

But you don't need the knife & forklift. Here are some items you most likely already have at home that you can use for "free" weights:

An 16.7 ounce water bottle weighs approximately one pound 2 oz, a bit less than the knife & forklift.

Quart of milk approx: 2 pounds 4 oz or 2 ¼ pounds

A 2 liter bottle of soda is a little over 4 1/2 pounds.

A gallon of milk weighs approximately 8.5 pounds.  Laundry detergent jug could be used too. Just make it's okay with your doctor to exercise with any weights.

Here's a great article about lots of ways to make your own 'free' weights!

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here's what we're looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up
hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.
    -
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
    -
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.
    -
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
    -
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you'll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it's a copy. We've tested it out and fans say they look terrific!

    Subject: Telehealth and COVID-19

Hi Dick and Chad. Thanks for creating the podcasts. Just wanted to provide some background info on Chad's telehealth experience. Basically, the Federal Government has provided waivers to doctor's offices, hospitals, etc to use "non-HIPAA compliant" means of communication to their patients due to COVID-19 emergency declaration. This is temporary and the waivers will expire when the emergency is lifted.

Wow! This is our 5th year of Independent Production! (First Giz Wiz show was February 20th, 2006.) Thanks to our wonderful Patreon supporters we're now going into year 15. On this week's show three or even four gadgets you may not know about. Here's number one.

The Aduro Multi Charging Station with Surge Protector

I found a new place to spend money on gadgets. A website called Until Gone, link below. That's where I bought my ADURO SURGE WALL CHARGING TOWER W/ 12 OUTLETS & DUAL USB PORTS. Yep, that's a total of 14 Ports allows you to plug in 12 AC devices and up to 2 USB devices at the same time. As long as they don't exceed 15A in total. (See label on device if you buy one.) I'm not so sure it's 'small & compact size is perfect for travel' but that's what the company says. You'll see the size of the device in our video. It's also said to have Safety Shutdown Technology and Integrated SmartCharge technology. You learn a lot more about it on this week's show. MSRP $49.99, but it's $39.99 on the company website, and there are plenty of lower prices with a web search. At Until Gone is was $16.99, but it's now gone from there.

    Chipolo One -- Bluetooth Tracker.

I wanted something special from a tracker. I wanted one that would alert me if I left something behind. So when I read that the Chipolo ONE plays a 120dB loud sound that helps you find your missing keys fast, I bought one. It's said to be water-resistant so you can use it in all conditions without having to worry about damaging your tracking device. Attach your Chipolo to any item you want to track and connect it with the Chipolo app on your iPhone or Android phone. That's what I needed because I kept leaving my backpack behind at trade show booths after recording a segment there. Another feature I liked is that it's powered by a CR2032 coin battery which has a battery life of up to 2 years. And when the battery starts to get low you will get notified and you can easily replace the battery! That's a big plus. But this was going to be the Chipolo's biggest plus for me: FREE OUT OF RANGE ALERTS - No more leaving you home without your keys or wallet. Receive a notification when going out and leaving your items behind. No subscription required. I couldn't that to work, and as matter of fact, the unit arrived from Amazon with a dead battery. You'll see all the details on this week's show, or at the video link below. I paid $24.90.

We Test The Tesla of Boats!

That's what my email from BoatUS said! I had to see what they were talking about. It seems an ex-Microsoft engineer leaves them in order to to build fast electric boats. Following two years in development, Zin Electric Boats launched its Z2R, a 20-foot carbon-fiber runabout powered by the BMW i3 battery coupled with a Torqeedo Deep Blue propulsion system. One of the advantages to electric power is that it provides instant torque. Weighing just 1,750 pounds, the Z2R can top 35 mph, and at cruising speed of 10 to 12 mph has a range of 80 to 100 miles. The battery can be charged with either 110V or 220V and costs less than $6 to recharge. The interior combines wood finishes with composite accents, comfortable seating, touchscreen system monitoring, and a custom-designed Fusion sound system. The Z2R was launched at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2020, where BoatUS Magazine's senior editor Rich Armstrong took it for a spin. The boat sells at the luxury price of $250,000. Zin says his primary market will be as a tender for large yachts. Look for a feature story on electric and hybrid marine propulsion in the April/May 2020 issue of BoatUS Magazine.

Chad's Crappy Corner & his final gadget for his March Theme.

For Chad's final 'Cheap Gadgets For When You're Ill” March theme, Chad bought the Fever Bugz Stick-On Fever Indicators.

Some company info: Fever-Bugz Stick-On Fever Indicators makes temperature reading fun and easy, instead of a chore. This innovative fever indicator allows you to visually monitor your children’s temperature up to 48 hours with No Fuss. Monitor your child’s temperature all day long by simply looking at the Bug on their forehead. Imagine, now you can check your children’s fever at night while they’re sleeping without disturbing them.

And Chad's take: Basically Chad liked these, but he wished the temperatures showed up a bit brighter. But he liked the idea that kids would probably like to wear them and parents could watch their kid's temperature over a 48 hour period. They were inexpensive too, at about $6.50 for eight indicators in fun designs.
