After more than a dozen years as "Special Correspondent" - once a month, for a full hour, where I joined Craig Crossman and later in the series, Ben Crossman on Computer America, it was time to take a break from the series. An upcoming helmet that adds a lot of high tech features to biking.

Sena Technologies showed what they call the world’s first Bluetooth and QHD Action camera integrated cycling helmet. In addition to a built-in video camera, the Sena Smart Helmet for Cycling has its own Bluetooth communication system. That means a rider can stay in touch with up to three riding companions. If they want they can also listen and even share music. (Of course they each must have their own Sema helmet.) And the Bluetooth, built in mic and built in speakers means you can make and take phone calls. But wait, there's more. In addition to Bluetooth, there's WiFi, so riders can share their photos and videos via the Sena camera app. (This is of course NOT while they're riding!) Another feature is an onboard FM radio with auto-scanning. Sena says you can record up to 2 hours of QHD quality (1440p/30fps) video or FHD (1080p/60fps) video. There's also MicroSD card slot for memory cards up to 64 GB. Their website says "coming soon" and the price is to be determined. This is a 2017 release, due out in the Spring.

Biketones, another way to alert people in a friendly way.

Here's the Biketones story. Horntones released an MP3 car horn, back in 2007. The inventor's son wanted to have a custom horn for his bicycle. He started to invent such a horn in 2012 when he was 9 years old. After 4 years of searching out components, learning solid modeling and making several rounds of prototypes, the father and son debuted Biketones at the 2016 Interbike Show in Las Vegas. Available in 7 different colors, sounding 7 different fixed MP3 audio clips range from the familiar minions siren "Bee Doo, Bee Doo, Bee Doo", to the Dixie horn. Each horn retails for under $20. You can see and hear the 7 variations of the Biketones here:

Make sure you're seen on the road or even off the road.

The Lumos Lighted Helmet features 28 super bright white LEDs in the front and 22 super bright red LEDs in the rear to provide over 80 lumens of illumination. This should ensure that you will stand out on the road. Once charged the battery lasts approximately 3 hours when the lights are on solid mode or 6 hours on blinking mode. The helmet takes approximately 2 hours to charge. But wait, there's more! For the turn signals, you should always use hand signals but there are amber LED turn signals you can use as a supplement. There's a companion app which allows users to configure brake light preferences, as well as monitor battery life. Included with the helmet is one normal remote and one extended-buttons remote for the turn signals, as well as a remote mount and charging cable. The Lumos will retail for between $149 & $179.00. As of 10/23/16 it was $149.00 on the company website:
