The Giz Wiz Show, Week of Nov. 6th, 2013, Netcast 1441.

Giz Wiz Videos of the Week -- from 45 years ago!

Freeze Fame from that 45 year old 8mm film. That's Betty White in the foreground! Recognize anyone else?Do you have lots of VHS, or even VHS-C videotapes? They sit around in boxes because you no longer have a working VHS player. And boxes of slides, but no slide projector? Or like me, an older guy, you might even have 8mm or 16mm film! (Yeah, movie film!) Well, there’s a way to enjoy them all again in a digital format! For 15 years YesVideo has helped people save, protect and share generations of priceless memories. My 8mm films are truly irreplaceable because they contain shots of many of the stars that appeared on The Match Game. At a press event for Holiday Gift ideas, I was given a gift certificate for a free digital transfer of old media. I took advantage of it by having some of my old 8mm movies made digital. I had sort of done that myself years earlier by projecting the film and then videotaping the image on the screen. The results were okay, but not great. Now thanks to YesVideo, I have not only have a great copy of those 8mm films, I also have them stored on the web. Once your old media is converted, you don’t have to worry about the media aging and falling apart. Videos are easy to watch and with YesVideo DVD menus with chapter pictures, you don’t have to fast-forward or rewind to find the scenes you want. Instead of setting up any equipment you’ll be able to access your home movies, videos, etc. online and from any device - TVs, computers, iPad’s, iPhones, or any other web- enabled device. YesVideo also makes it easy to edit videos and share favorite clips with friends and family via email and on Facebook. I called to confirm and YesVideo said their customers receive free and unlimited cloud storage for their videos. You can go to any of the 30,000 retail locations including Costco, CVS, Rite Aid, Sam’s, Wal-Mart, Target, etc., or place your order online. Get all the details here:

Here are 3 one-minute highlights reels via YesVideo. They’re from a movie satire I wrote and produced called “242nd Street”– the low-rent version of the musical 42nd Street. See if you can pick out the celebrities that flash by.

Alone, but need a helping hand? These two new gadgets lend a helping hand.

Black & Decker has had great success with their flexible hose snake lights. There have been quite a few versions over the years. This newest version (coming in November) is the Black & Decker Rechargeable LED Snake Light. It runs for up to 5 hours away from AC. And since it uses Lithium batteries, once it’s charged it should have that charge for up to 18 months. That means when you need it, it should have plenty of power. With 10 LEDs, the new Snake Light provides 44 lumens of bright light. It comes with it own charger, and thankfully, the charger says Black & Decker right on it, so you won’t get it mixed up with the dozens of other chargers you most likely have. The one feature this new device lacks is a charging light, so I just charged it overnight. I have not seen this particular version of the Snake Light for sale online yet. It will be available soon at Amazon, in Wal-Mart, and will retail for under $30.

Note: If you just type Black & Decker Snake Light in search you will get dozens of other versions, but the newest one and the one I showed on air is the 4V Max Rechargeable Lithium Snake Light Flashlight. Model #: BDCF4SL

Leo's Crap! But sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's very good!

It turned out that Leo had no crap of his own except knock-offs of very high-end cell phones a friend had brought him from overseas. I asked Leo for a website where they might be seen or even bought, but it seems the friend brought them from China and Leo bought them from the friend. A knock-off of an iPhone that uses Android to pretend it’s an iPhone is under $50! ….But wait, there’s more! Leo also received a box ‘o crap from CasSandra, one of the regulars in the chatroom. It turned out to be a Dreamcast, a video game console released by Sega in the late 1990’s. Here’s a bit more about the device from Wikipedia:  It was the first entry in the sixth generation of video game consoles, preceding its rivals, the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. The Dreamcast was Sega's last home console to date. Sega intended to launch the console as part of a comeback after its previous efforts with the Sega Saturn failed. With a strong marketing campaign and reformed studios to develop new creative content, the Dreamcast was initially well received with a very successful launch and strong sales. However when Sony announced the eagerly awaited PlayStation 2, sales of the Dreamcast plummeted and it lost its momentum. Sega later came to the realization that it did not have the resources to compete as it was in dire financial straits. The company discontinued the Dreamcast in North America early in March 2001.” And now back to me! Leo said he loved getting a Dreamcast because his son Henry wondered where theirs had gone. Jason suggested that Leo find a copy of Crazy Taxi, which evidently is a fun game to play on the Dreamcast!

Dick's Gadget Warehouse & Another Viewer's Video. Plus how to submit yours!

Only once did we show a second video from a viewer. This week we break that record by showing a third video – and it’s from the same viewer. Let’s face it, Steve has an amazing amount of “gadget warehouse” worthy stuff! This one is an amazing piece of portable audio equipment! Here’s his email and link. Below that is how to submit your video.

Hi Dick, Leo, and Jason;

Since you like my previous submissions, here is a third, an item from my Gadget Museum.

                                       *******

We'd love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show.

Here's what we're looking for: Your home made Videos -- two to three minutes long - in the any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap! Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I Invented This! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions.

My Gadget Warehouse! Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My favorite gadget of all time! Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be something you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jason, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long, 4 MAX! Low production value is fine. Even welcomed! That way our stuff doesn't look bad by comparison. We've set the bar low. Don't trip over it.

If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you will now be awarded with some sort of prize. It's Leo's way to get rid of somel the crap he shows weekly on The Giz Wiz Show. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv

Letter of the Week:

Love the show. It shows me what crap to talk my mom and grandma out of buying.
Anyway, I saw this in the new PCWorld issue and thought it might help Leo out
