OMGChad joins as co-host! The Giz Wiz, Show of January 8th, 2014, Netcast 1450

NEW! TWO SPECIALS FROM CES, with Father Robert Ballecer and The Giz Wiz. (Cick show title to view either special.)

Fr. Robert Ballecer and Dick DeBartolo report from Las Vegas for ShowStoppers at CES 2014.

Fr. Robert Ballecer and Dick DeBartolo give us a taste of what was presented at PEPCOM's Digital Experience 2014 in Las Vegas.

And now back to the The Giz Wiz for this week:

A new device for emergency high-rise building evacuation.

At the NY Boat Show I saw a very interesting gadget that seemed totally out of place in a marine environment. It’s the SkySaver, designed to be a life-saving personal rescue device to get you out of a high-rise building in an emergency. That’s why I’m not sure why it was at a boat show. SkySaver is a self-contained, cable carrying backpack, or as the company calls it, the ultimate piece of survival gear for high-rise occupants. Simply strap it on, affix the fireproof cable to a secure anchor point, and safely descend down the side of the structure. Although in the video I saw, a guy connects the cable to a hook-eye bolt to the wall, the spokesman said you can pretty much hook it to anything large in the room, like a desk, bed, etc. Depending on the model, it’s effective for use in buildings up to 25 stories tall. The SkySaver Model ’160′ weighs 22 lbs and has a carrying weight range from 66-300 lbs. The cable length is 160 feet, which is approximately the height of a 15 story building. An automatic hydraulic braking system lowers users at a rate of 3-6 feet/second and is fire resistant up to 1500° F.  The model 160 will probably retail for about $500 to $600. This is not on the market yet, but should be out in 3 to 6 months. You can get more info and sign up for updates at:

mPower Jump IT, a compact jump starter device.

Another gadget I found at the boat show that should be great for the automotive market is the mPower JUMP IT. The company says it’s powerful enough to jump start any 12V auto or boat battery, yet it’s small enough to fit in your glove box. I have a lead-acid jump starter device on my boat, but it has several disadvantages. The worst is that the battery slowly discharges, and could be totally dead by the time you really need it. The market director at mPower said their Jump It only had to be charged for about four hours and then would retain it’s power for about a year. It’s also really compact, roughly 7” X 3” X 1.38”. And the weight is a light 1.52 pounds. The portable jump device I have on my boat is roughly 12” X 6” X 7.5 and it weights a hefty 17 pounds. The cost of the two units is roughly the same, about $90. While my jump starter has a light and an inventor, I would prefer the safety of a lithium ion battery that won’t constantly deplete itself when not in use. There’s no switch on the JUMP IT, it has an automatic on feature. It’s rated at 600A peak current and the jumper cables are built in. JUMP IT is just reaching the marketplace and right now it’s available at the company website. There’s more info there too:

Giz Wiz Video of the Week: A very different kind of wireless Bluetooth/NFC Speaker.

Finally, a wireless Bluetooth speaker that's very different. The JBL Pulse has an amazing amount of technology and 64 LED lights inside! When the music starts, so does the amazing light show. (Unless of course, you shut it off.) There are five pre-programmed patterns that change and pulse in time with your music. But wait, there’s more! Download the free JBL MusicFlow app, and you’ll be able to adjust the intensity of the lights, and download new patterns. You can also adjust the lights and patterns directly on the device, but you won’t have as much control. An Android app has just been added. Before it was iOS only. If you're using the old JBL speaker app on Android, it should tell you automatically an upgrade is available, and that will include the Pulse.) The Pulse has two 1-1/2" full-range drivers with a bass port and uses JBL's advanced digital signal processing to produce a very decent sound for it’s size. It also has NFC (Near Field Communication) for easy tap-to-pair. The company says the Pulse's built-in chargeable battery (Li-ion 2000 mAh capacity) delivers up to 5 hours of music and lights (or up to 10 hours of just music). Some reviews I read said the music & light function can get up to 6.5 hours on a full charge. An auxiliary input lets you play music from non-Bluetooth portable devices too. In this price range (about $200), there are Bluetooth speakers with much better bass, but no other speaker can hypnotize like this one! Online I see the frequency response listed as 100Hz(min) / 20KHz(max) which explains the lack of bass. The JBL Pulse is 3-1/8"W x 7-1/8"H x 3-3/16"D and an amazing device. $199.99.

Chad Chooses His Crap Of The Week!

Chad tries on a new t-shirt given to him by Jeff Needles.

It turns out to be a GlowThreads T-shirt. What’s that you ask? It’s the only t-shirt I know of that comes with its own Mini UV Light. The object is that you can draw, or even scribble glowing designs on your GlowThreads T-Shirt in the dark. Your glowing designs last 30-45 seconds than disappear. Since there’s no marks or anything left on the shirt, you can redraw over and over again! Every shirt comes with a Mini UV Light that you use to draw your designs. And you don’t have to aim for a specific part of the shirt to draw. You can draw on every part of the shirt - front, back, sides and even the sleeves! Chad wondered about washing them. Here’s what the company website says: Treat them as you would a regular t-shirt. We recommend that you turn the shirt inside out and wash on a delicate cycle for the best results.  And Chad’s take? The company says the designs you draw last 45 second to a minute. Amazon says 30-45 seconds. In the studio they seemed to disappear after a few seconds on camera when Chad was drawing on his GlowThreads T-shirt. Chad & producer Jason Howell said the image lasted longer when viewed live in the studio, but they were nothing like the longer lasting image shown in the company video. At $25 each, these t-shirts could be fun at a party or dance, but remember your image time may be shorter than expected.

Back To Dick's Gadget Warehouse - Another viewer's video, and how to submit yours.

A submission always starts with an email like this one:

Dan Linder  /  Subject: GizWiz gadget warehouse viewer submission

I'm a long time listener to the GizWiz show.  I've written in a couple times but this is my first viewer submission. Here is the video URL:

http://youtu.be/_IHGPTSBEG0

It features my very reliable Magnavox AM/FM clock radio purchased in November 1988. It met my need of having two alarms - one I could ignore and sleep through, and a louder one set for a later time that would drive me from my slumber.  (Good for me since I was beginning my senior year of high school.)Now, 25 years later, I have a wife and two kids to make sure I'm awake in the morning, but this little guy is still ticking along. One feature that sets this apart from other clock radios I've seen is the "high/low" setting on the display brightness.  When I first used the clock, the low brightness setting was more than plenty (and high was like a lighthouse in a dark room).  Over the years the LEDs have started to dim, and this past month I finally had to turn on the high brightness setting full time. Thanks to this simple design addition by an engineer 25+ years ago I'm able to continue to use this radio - hopefully for another 20 years.  Sadly, much longer than any other electronic device I've purchased in the past couple decades...

Thanks for the great show. Dan from Bellevue Nebraska

                                     *************

We'd love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show.

Here's what we're looking for: Your home made Videos -- two to three minutes long - in the any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap! Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I Invented This! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions.

My Gadget Warehouse! Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My favorite gadget of all time! Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be something you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jason, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you will now be awarded with some sort of prize. Like an autographed MAD and some piece of crap. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv

Letter of the week: I picked an email from a company that's going to be at CES. I always find so much of the 'same old stuff' at CES. This looks VERY different.

Dick, I wonder if you may be going to CES next week? If so, I wanted to reach out to you regarding Panono, a throwable ball camera, which has recently announced that it has upgraded the camera modules to boost the camera from 72 to 108 megapixels.

This makes the throwable ball camera the first consumer camera to cross the 100 megapixels mark -- and they are about to close their $900,000 funding campaign on Indiegogo, possibly later today.

The ball-shaped Panono is simple to use - you throw it in the air, and at its highest point all the 36 cameras fire simultaneously to capture a richly detailed panorama of everything, in every direction, including the photographer. It is available to pre-order at a discounted price of $499 on Indiegogo.com  for the next week.

Do let me know if this may be interesting to you. If so, I can set up a conversation with the founder, Jonas Pfeil, as well as a hands-on demo where you'd be welcome to try out the throwable ball camera if you wished to.  Pia
