The Giz Wiz, Week of April 9th, 2014, Show # 1463

3 Unique 3D Printers from the 3D Printing Conference + Expo.

XYZprinting’s first printer, the da Vinci 1.0, won the CES 2014 Editors’ Choice Award for being the most approachable and affordable 3D printing machine. It was also recognized by earning a Tom’s Guide Readers’ Choice Award. I have to say it was an impressive looking device considering the cost. Something XYZPrinting calls EZ Mode SW is designed to allow non-experienced users to print 3D designs. The da Vinci 1.0 offers four printing modes with a single nozzle print head. The largest build volume is 7.8" x 7.8" x 7.8" (20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm). The da Vinci 1.0 can prints with two materials, ABS and PLA, and it prints in one color. A free filament starter kit and free XYZWare software are included in the $499 price. It's available on Amazon.

And now for something completely different. A Delta-type Design 3D Printer.

Every 3D Printer I saw at the 3D Inside Printing Expo had a different claim to fame. The NEW Rostock MAX v2 is said to offer the largest build envelope of any printer under $1,000!  It's one of the stranger looking 3D printers out there, and it comes in kit form. As the company puts it: "With everything you'll need to build a complete machine - every nut, bolt, wire and fastener – this is a true builder’s kit!  The massive Onyx heated bed and super flat borosilicate glass build plate allow you to print more than just PLA. From ABS to Taulman Nylon, you’re limited only by your creativity when it comes to printing. From our incredibly simple and efficient EZStruder, to our SD Card-ready firmware, the MAX v2 is simply the best value you’ll find anywhere." They say it takes about 20 hours to build, but if you're not handy or don't have the time, you can get a completely built model for $1375.00.

Giz Wiz Video of the Week #2. I bet you never knew a 3D printer could print this!

At the last 3D Printer Show a few months ago, I thought I had seen the most unusual 3D printer ever. It made small objects using reams of plain paper for the build. But I saw something even more unusual at the 3D Inside Printer Expo (April 3-4-14). The 3D Systems ChefJet series of 3D printers can print candy and other edibles! They were printing candy at the show, and I ate a couple of pieces. Tasted just like, well candy! Although they're dubbed "kitchen-ready 3D printers" they are really big; about the size of two huge microwave ovens sitting one on top of the other. I think the ChefJet 3Dprinters are more for the specialty coffee shop, the professional baker, cake masters, and high-end event planners and restaurant owners. Equipped with The Digital Cookbook, it has easy to use software for the non-CAD consumer. TheChefJet 3D printer is a monochrome, countertop sized printer with a generous build volume of 8x8x6”, ideal for single color confections and cake toppers. It will be priced in the sub-$5,000 range. The ChefJet Pro 3D printer is a full-color, large format printer with a build volume of 10x14x8”. ChefJet printable materials for both models come in a variety of recipes, including chocolate, vanilla, mint, sour apple, cherry and watermelon, all of which can be printed in full-color. It will be priced in the sub-$10,000 range. Both ChefJet models are expected to be available in the second half of 2014.

Chad's Crappy Corner! But it might be good. (Might be.)

Here’s the info I found on Chad’s Crap for this week: Move over plastic wrap, the CoverBlubber is here! It's the super stretchy food saver for use inside the refrigerator or freezer. CoverBlubber is made of food safe StickyRubber, a safer alternative to plastic wrap that you can place directly on food or containers of various shapes and sizes. The CoverBlubber is the perfect food storage solution--it stretches and clings, seals airtight and form fits to fresh cut food and just about any container. So cool to use you'll want leftovers! Mixed 4 Pack $20.00.

And Chad's take? Chad only had the next to smallest CoverBlubber, so he was limited as to what he could try it on. It worked fine on half an apple, but not half a banana. Because of their shape it looks like they'll probably work best on round fruits and vegetables. Chad noticed a slight odor in the CoverBlubber, but it wasn't bad. Your best bet is to get the different sizes package because they'll be more versitile. Whether it's better and cheaper than Saran wrap is undecided.

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show.

Here’s what we’re looking: Your home shoot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:

I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won't get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, "family friendly" language applies.

I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can't market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it's a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.

My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don't have a warehouse. It doesn't matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you're still hanging on to it.

My Favorite Gadget of All Time: Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be something you just bought too.

Post them on YouTube and send our producer, Jason, the link! We'll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that's unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you will now be awarded with some sort of prize. Like an autographed MAD magazine and some piece of crap. So that's one more (so-so) reason to send in your video!

All show submissions go to gizwiz@twit.tv
